I played my last gig of the year yesterday. An almost complete performance of Handel's Messiah oratorio. As my teacher used to say, "It wouldn't be Christmas without the Messiah."

    We had 1 bass, 1 cello, 2 viola, 2 2nds and 2 1s violins, 2 oboe, 2 trumpet, timpani and harpsichord.

I have a love/hate relationship with this work. I've played or sang parts of it for most of my life. It stirs up lots of positive and negative memories.

I played my first messiah this year. 1 of each string, a few assorted winds, piano and timp. The cellist was super sick and on medication, so I ended up playing almost all the way through just in case she had to stop for anything. it was... an experience.

thankfully we only did the christmas half + Hallelujah and the amen.

Yup. Did it again this year with the same group. Same feelings.
