Metal Bass Arpeggios and Scales

Discussion in 'Technique [BG]' started by DreamJazz, May 26, 2003.

  1. For all you metal bass players. What kind of scales do you guys like to incorporate and fool around with to keep everything sounding fresh. Not just your basic classic metal stuff. But more of the eastern sounding scales/arpeggios as well as some jazz scales etc. that are used alot more often now in bands like tool, spiral archetiect, dream theater, etc ???

    So whats your thing ?

Check out Allan Holdsworth, his music have inspired plenty of bands in the tech metal section like Cynic, Martyr, Aghora and so forth.

Santiago from Aghora wrote abit some arpeggio stuff : http://dsrmusic.com/metaltab/text/guitarLessons/theLessons/sdoblesL1.html

But get Allan Holdsworth instructional video, it recomends 10 scales :

Thats the 10 most usable scales in all positions. But get his video, you will learn more from it.

  3. As far as metal goes, E, E minor, and A minor are sufficient.

    Gotta love that phrygian :bassist:

Also, learn some diminished and whole-tone scales.

But, as always, the key is not just to memorize scales, but to understand how the notes in them work.
