when i'm isolating one string or two (even when i'm not playing very hard) unused strings are vibrating the whole time unless i've constantly got a finger lightly on them. could this be because of my metal bridge (chrome). would a nicer bridge dampen the vibration from one string to another?
if so, what would be a good bridge to go with (i'm left handed)

  2. No, changing the bridge will generally not eliminate that completely. Part of developing good technique is getting in the habit of damping unused strings, as you've already started doing. It's even more of an issue when you're playing 5/6/7 string basses...

agreed... as you play, the whole bass resonates, and since the strings are attached, they'll resonate too if they aren't damped.
