In 1982 +/- , I was at Wheatland Music Festival in Remus, MI. My family went for years—my sister still goes, annually. I have a memory of handling an electric bass in one of the main vendor tents that had a scroll headstock and fretboard lights. This lutherie ended up being inspirational in a couple of ways; the event details are foggy, though! Anyone know who the builder might have been? It’s just as likely that it was Elderly or other retailer, and not a maker’s tent. Also—I don’t remember seeing other instruments... So it could even have been a random festival-goer’s instrument.
I would try www.galloupguitars.com/ It used to be called The Guitar Hospital, and I swear I saw some scroll basses there once...
I’ve never met Bryan, but my cousin is a good friend. It hadn’t even crossed my mind that he’d been making guitars that long—he took ownership in 1984 from Dan Erlewine. Who started doing guitar repair in 1967! And the festival is practically in their backyard. Great tip, @trainyourhuman! Thanks. I’ll reach out!
