might sound like a dumb question but...

Where did you all get your basses? I have been looking for a while and can't find anything here in Florida.

Sorry..I should've put where I am. I do happen to be in the Tampa/St. Pete area so I'll try to look into the person you mentioned. I'm willing to travel pretty much anywhere in FLA though, for the right bass at the right price.

  3. The obvious answer would be the "DB store of course" but you are correct in that it is more difficult to find a selection of DBs than most other instruments...that's one of the joys of playing one right? I have 5 basses, here is what I do....
There are seldom any "DB only" shops so you must search every violin shop in the region and expect to get a few "hell no" replies when you ask if they have any basses. My favorite approach is checking the local classifieds every week (takes patients). You never know what you may find. You must be ready to pounce when you see the add..."bass cello", "old bass", etc. You also have a better chance of getting a bargain this way.
Other resources....um...I've heard of basses at Antique stores. I stop at as many as I can but have yet to find one. If you get really crazy you can call around to the schools. Cold call every player you know. I have a list of most DB players in town (KC is pretty small) and have discovered a few that way...Use your imagination. Have fun searching and play everything you see.

I live in Toronto and when I decided to get my first URB I looked for a couple of months to locate a decent used bass. No luck....big city like this and no used URB's...go figure. It was easy though to find new ones for 10 grand.
Anyway, one day my wife and I decide to do a long weekend in Quebec City. Normally we would fly but we had just bought a new SUV so we thought we'd try it out on a long distance drive. On the last day we're in Quebec City my wife decides to go antiqueing. We walk into about the fifth antique shop and what do I see in the distance but a 1962 Kay in excellent plus plus condition. I had previously done my used URB homework(including Kays) and knew that I had a bargain in front of me. I bought it for $1600 CDN (about$1050 US) and took it home.Good thing we took the SUV and didn't fly.
