I decided to upgrade my MIJ Jazz classic '60s with a pair of Aguilar AG 4J-60. I didn't want an overwound pickup and these should be a classic moderate-output design, so... let's begin with this photo:

Neck position, the Aguilar on the left, the stock on the right.
The Aguilar looks like a Fender CS60, a big simple coil.
The MIJ stock has a smaller coil + a magnet at the base, and the shielding plate.
    Two questions:
    1) why the MIJ stock has a magnet at the base? Is it inside the coil in the Aguilar?
    2) should I shield the pickup cavity and keep the shielding plate as well?

Aguilar has magnet polepieces....MIJ doesn't. It has steel polepieces.
