Some what old for Lull (2003) I have thing for 24 fret 35" Mike Lulls So I traded a M5V for this one a while back. Well, it needed some love. The frets where bigger then what I was used to and it was not Pleked. Mike refretted and Pleked it. That changed everything and I mean everything about how it played. It kills now. I also decided to bypass the pan pot and run the bass in series. It is a monster and a workhorse. I use this one all the time for learning new material. Check it
435 takes it back a bit to 2003 Pau Ferro board with a alder body. 9 volt Bart pre and the same 18 mm spacing as Mike's current 5 strings.
Neat bass! I always liked the old M5 body shapes over the redesign. I wonder why he changed them? Wasn’t this one up on the old BassNW website back in the day? Speaking of refrets, my M5V will need one soon! Looks like it’ll be taking a trip back home!
Not sure why He changed...I like both actually. This might have been on the site at one point...I have no idea if it had multiple owners but after the neck work now its staying...lol It currently another flavor for my prog band when I'm not using the TP5. (Its my 5 string J bass now so to speak). Dude I think I will only have Mike do the fret work on my basses for now on. It is perfect. You will be satisfied.,.
Hey Stumbo... Its one of these FretWraps™ String Muters (3-Pack) From the site... Finally, a professional string dampener / muting accessory that every studio, session player, and tapping aficionado should have! Slide on a FretWrap to effectively cut overtones and sympathetic resonance during recording, live performance, two-hand tapping, or any creative situation where you need that extra muting hand for cleaner takes without the unwanted string noise or ringing. The adjustable strap lets you fine-tune the pressure and dampening of the strings. Quickly slides over the headstock when not in use. No special guitar modification, installation, or tools required - Yet amazingly effective! I have one on every bass in my stable...I dig the Stone color ones.
So Mike just replaced the frets with smaller ones, eh? I had a guy tell me he'd likely do the same on my Hammersmith if I wanted them smaller. Said it beats filing all day. Might do it one day but I got used to them. Would opt for smaller ones if I did it again but at least I'll get more fret dressings out of them before they need replaced Cool bass...I've played a few Lulls and they're excellent.
Thanks Jimmy...I'm lucky that I have a good relationship with those guys and they know what I like. As result based on knowing that He thought it was best to replace them. It really plays like a whole different animal now and I also swear by the Plek machine.
I concur. Mike has done a few of my basses and the playability is outstanding. I took one of my fenders in after playing it as-is for about 12-ish years. I had him plek it because I knew it could be better. It was different animal once I got it back. The way that bass plays is pretty much the yardstick by which I judge others.
I mostly have narrow tall frets (6105s) on my guitars and basses. Picked up my strat for the first time in a year the other day and the frets felt huge, though they feel fie on the bass
I wish I were close enough for that to be possible. Thankfully, here in Jackson, MS, we have and excellent luthier/guitar repair guy. He did a refret of a Stingray SR5 of mine and did an outstanding job. The best-playing Stingray I’ve ever played, considering the high action and heavy gauge strings I like to use (and he doesn’t give me grief about that, either...).
There are some great guys and here in Boston and one that I have been working with for years... Mike has the Plek machine and I'm also a artist for him so for me I just sent him the bass.
