I just picked up a MIM Fender Jazz deluxe active V and the output is lower than my Passive P-Bass with a Darkstar in it. My question is . If I replace the Pre with an Audere will I increase my Gain or will it stay the same. Also If I replace the Pre and Pickups will that give me the gain increase I am looking for? I like the sound of this bass very much but without a 2 channel Amp Or a 2 Channel outboard Pre I am stuck playing with Knobs every time I switch Basses. The other option would be a single channel Preamp Pedal and use it to boost the signal so they are both even? So what would you do and what pickups and pre amp would you use . Or what Preamp would you use?

  2. I will give you the benefit of the doubt, and assume the battery is fresh and is putting out the recommended 9 volts...
Have you checked if there is any kind of Gain pot on the preamp module?
If indeed the pickups/pre is the problem, it kind of depends on what kind of "sound" you're looking to get. Some preamps can "colour" the tone of the bass. An Audere, as well as the Aguillar preamps are very transparent, so either of those are a good choice. Though I do not have experience with it, supposedly the Audere is the cleanest out there.
Pickups are the tricky part. You definitely have to choose wisely here, and even so might wind up trying a few different pairs.
I myself am partial to Duncans, and I really like the SJ5 67/70 for a great traditional 70's tone. But then there are the Quarter Pounders, which are hotter, but have more of a modern, scooped tone....
I'm not sure how to describe Nordstrands or any other boutique pickups, though...

Thank you for your reply eastcoasteddie . Yes the battery is fresh and putting out a hair over 9v. I Don't know if the stock Fender Pre has a gain trim pot or not I will have to check. I am thinking of going with the Audere But it does not like the Fender Noisless pickups with out some mods. So I am thinking about replacing them but not quite sure of what I will try first for pickups.

No Gain Pot inside on the Pre. I like the tone but the output stinks.
