My new MIM JB came with a stick on it saying Standard Jazz Bass, alder body, one piece maple neck, rosewood fretboard, nickel silver jumbo frets and upgraded Standard Jazz Bass pickups. Anyone knows what's new on these pickups? According to Fender's website: "The J-Bass now incorporates two Bi-Pole pickups fashioned after the American Series pickups." Please, anyone knows what about these pickups. Anyone have compared these new ones with the MIA JB pickups? Is it the same? I'll gain any benefit changing these pickps for another one like EMG, Seymours, DiMarzio, etc ... The serial number is MZ1164802. Thanks.
These new pick-ups are the same size as normal Jazz pickups (bridge p/u being slightly longer than the neck p/u). The older MIM Jazz basses had 2 pick-ups that were the same length &, IIRC, had different spacing for the brigde. If you wanted to change the p/u's in the older MIM's you had to do some modifications to the beidge p/u hole. I've compared the newer MIM's to the older ones &, IMO, the newer ones sound better. Pickup are very weird subject. Everyone has their own opinion of what's good & what's bad. I personally have basses with all 3 pick-up companied you mentioned & I like them all. Play the bass for a while. See if you like the sound you're getting out of the bass, if not, go from thier. Go to p/u websites (or here) & see how they describe their p/u's & see if you like the description & then you'll have to do the trail & error of buying p/u's, installing them & seeing/hearing if you like them.
Thank you, Nino. Actually I like the sound of these new MIM pickups. I have JB fretless clone (handmade) with EMG JV set (alnico active vintage sound), and I'll try it on my new MIM JB. I'm just impressed how good are these new MIM JazzBass, really a bang for the buck. Thanks
