    Hello TBers,

I recently replaced my stereo speakers with a nice pair of Magnats. So I am left with a couple of 90s AKAI 3-way speakers, rated at 50w and 6Ohm each. I was wondering how I could make good use of them, and since I sold my last amp due to severe neighbourhood problems, I was thinking of doing the following. Pick up one of those new TC Electronic 250W Class D heads and have the speakers work as the load. Therefore I have a small compact practice amp for very little cash. TC Electronics states minimum load impedance as 4Ohm. Connecting those 6Ohm speakers in parallel yields 3Ohm so it is out of the question. In series I have 12Ohm of impedance. My question is, will this work? What can I expect? For example there's easily a danger of blowing up the speakers if I crank it up since they are just 50W, but will that happen at 12Ohm impedance? Just an example of my worries/questions. So, is this feasible for a small practice amp without many expectations for serious bass tone?

    Thanks!!!

Absolutely there is risk of damaging the speakers, even at 12 ohms, unless you are very careful.

At 3 ohms (parallel), the risk is high that you damage your amp.

Sell them and purchase a small dedicated bass amp.

  4. Those speakers are not made for bass guitar. They won’t last long. Get a small cheap practice amp.

    Speakers are marginal
    Kinda work at low volumes

Either way at 3 ohms or 6 ohms
They gonna fart out way before you put to much power in them.

Use your ears as judgment just common sense. For the money and time to build a enclosure. Be easier to buy used practice amp for 30/60 dollars.

Build cost adds up. Unless got free scrap.
Won't be pretty. Technically would work.
    Nothing amazing though.

If you really wanna build something for fun a cheap 1x12 would work. Not a powerhouse but 2 cubic feet at 45hz with a Beta12a2 be good sounding 60 watt practice amp speaker

You guys are right, but I'm stubborn, and at some point I'll get a small cab. But for now I want them for occasional use at low levels, with not many demands for sound quality, just to hear my bass. I understand that if I use them I have to play at very low levels. As a system, these speakers connected in series are 12Ohm. This is how I will connect them so that I don't fry the amp. But what is their power rating in series as a system? 50w? 100w? Just getting a rough idea of how "high" they can go.

PS. In other words is it a 50W/12Ohm "cab" or a 100W/12Ohm "cab"?

Because the ratings are not likely to be realistic, 50 watts might be ok but this is just a guess.

I suck, but nobody really notices
Theres a nice little "hotone" head and cab. 5 watts. Sounds great. "Thunderbass"

My bass sounds better unplugged than through inappropriate kit that won’t survive anyway.

Sorry. We’ve tried this when short of dough or patience. If it worked we’d all have some rig like that at home.:) Time is better spent doing some extra job for someone just to buy something real.

How many people played through a Wollensak reel to reel? Raise your hands. Admit it.:)

Not knowing when you live. You could easily get a small used practice amp for that money. If not order some headphones, a headphone amp and you're good even in an apartment.

  11. Hand raised. Years ago I played through a roommates stereo and blew his speakers. He was not happy with me. Also played through a phonograph that had a mic input. Sounded like dog poopie.

I agree with each and everyone of you. You are right.

If you connect two cabs of 8Ohm/100W each in series, what is the rating of the combined cab? 16Ohm/100W or 16Ohm/200W? The reason I am asking is because I am clueless about cab connection modes.

16 ohms and 200 watts. Just be sure you understand how the power is defined, there are many examples where the numbers are not as conservative as others because they use different measurement units or definitions.

Where are you located? I have to imagine any pawn shop would have a junker practice amp available that would be way cheap and WAY better than what you are proposing here.

No. I will have a nifty light head I can use for now with my speakers and soon enough I'll get a decent cab to match it. My stuff will be new and not beat up items without warranty from a pawn shop.

Ok, then just wait until you have your nifty rig and show us pics without burning your house down.

If I was desperate enough to do that I'd use one speaker at a time so when I blew the cone out of one across the room I could switch to the other. I'd also disconnect crossover mid and tweeter.

But, bearing in mind you are embarking on an exercise that has a high risk of destroying the Akais, wouldn't it be better to see if you can sell them for enough money to get the suggested pawn shop practice amp? Or even, with luck, a bass cab?

One danger of blowing speakers is that sometimes amps become collateral damage.

As far as watts ratings are concerned, the issue is two fold. Firstly that your instrument signal is not sanitised and processed like recorded music, so will contain far higher peak signals for the same apparent listening volume, and secondly the bass guitar consists solely of the frequencies most likely to damage speakers. This means in practice the safe power handling of your speakers is a fraction of the rated power.

To the folks who know more than me about this stuff, what issues might there be in connecting the hifi speakers to the headphones output?

  20. I played bass through a pair of Akai 80's 3 way tower things at low volume. It was quite apparent that no more was to be had and no damage was done. I say so long as you don't mind possibly laying waste to speakers that are still serviceable if next to worthless, have a go at 12 ohms.

Absolutely do not expect to get anything like the loud you got playing records through them. Live bass is a different animal.
