Misaligned pickups and sound

Discussion in 'Pickups & Electronics [BG]' started by rabid_granny, Feb 26, 2002.

  1. Since I began my new bass hunt, I've learned a lot and noticed many flaws in my bass.

One of those flaws is a misaligned pickup. The pickup is off-centre by about 3-4 millimetres such that my D and G string are OVER the pole pieces instead of in-between. (I have P-bass style pickups).

Question - Would there be a sizable sound difference if the pickup were moved into alignment?

Note that these are low-quality pickups. Would it matter if they were high-quality?
  2. Yes, it will mae a rather significant difference, even with cheap pickups.

I'd suggest you give it a try. I've found this flaw on a great many MIM J basses, and I think it has a lot to do with the "twangy G-string" that is so prevalent on Mexican J basses.

  3. Unfortunatley, P pups are usually out of alignment. I've even seen Fenders with the upper pup moved. My old Memphis and my current Squire both have misaligned pups, and it does cutdown on volume and tone.

I wonder why no one can ever get their pups in the right spot?

    Rock on
