So I'm looking to mix it up a little, and before I got involved to trying to do it, I figured I'd make a post.

I play a MM Stingray 5, and I was wondering if I can take the pickguard off (ala Jaco). Its a sunburst with tortoise-shell, and I think it would look wicked cool without the pickguard. However, I have a feeling that it's nescessary to cover the electronics because I've never seen one without the guard.
I figure if it were possible, I'd have seen someone do it.

    Thanks.

There is no routing around the pickup, but there IS routing around the controls. You will notice that SR5s are not rear routed, so from this you can deduce that they must be routed from the front. The area covered by a silver control plate on an sr4 is the same area that is routed out on a sr5.

Awesome, thanks. I wonder how hard it would be to get one of those SR4 plates?

And what about getting those volume/EQ nobs off?

  4. The controls are actually mounted on the pickguard. You would need to make a cover for the route that would hold all of the controls.

You can't take it off, sorry. You can with Bongos though.

I have a quick question (can't remember) are musicman basses vol/treb/mid/bass or vol/bass/mid/treb?

As for your question I supppose you can get a custom cut thing out for it, just like a pickguard that covers only that part.

Are they all like that, or just 'rays? Cuz my MM playing is mostly with the Bongo, and I seem to remember the bass coming first.

No you can't. The preamp would fall out.

    I don't have a Bongo right now to double-check, but I recall they go: vol-blend-mids (lo/hi stacked)-bass/treble (stacked)

    +1 ... that's it.. they look naked :D

would maybe look cool if someone made a SR5 look like a SR4, with a custom chrome plate over the preamp and a round pickguard anyone tried it?

I chose a clear plate because I prefered it's look over a chrome one.
