On my never ending search of musical exploration I'm now looking to pick up some music that deals heavily with modes, if anyone cares to toss out some suggestions for me I'd greatly appreciate it.

Check out the entire Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" CD. You can get lead sheets for virtually every tune on that album so you can study & play along. "So What" from that CD is like the Free Bird of jazz... everyone knows it, and everyone's played it. <lol> Also, John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" is another creme' de la creme' of modal playing.

    Happy listening!

...don't forget about 'Trane's "Impressions"(same changes as "So What"). ;)
  4. As mentioned before, Kind of Blue is the seminal modal jazz album. So What, the most famous song from that album utilizes the dorian mode, i think. I could be wrong though...

A lot of Freddie Hubbard's best(-known) tunes are also modal - like Sunflower, First Light and even some of the funkier stuff like Red Clay.
