Hello everyone, I am thinking about putting a thumb-rest on my Gibson SG Reissue. I was wondering if anyone on this board could recommend where I could get one. I always seem to have a hard time finding a place for my thumb to sit. I would like to put one in between the pickups. Has anyone replaced the bridge PU on the SG? I hate how it sounds solo and barely have the volume past 4. Are there any replacements out there? I also have a Dimarizo Model One PU lying around. Would it be a huge improvement over the stock neck PU in the Reissue? I've already swapped out the 3 piece floating bridge for a Hipshot supertone bridge and that made a big difference in tone & intonation. It definitely sounds like it has more depth and sustain. Thanks for the help! carlo3874
I'd try the Model One, easy to return to stock if its no good, as for the thumbrest, you should have no trouble finding one, the bridge pickup I would definatly replace, if its that bad, but I dont know of any standard replacment off of the top of my head,
I had this same problem when I first got that bass. At first the curved plastic ring around the bridge pickup is a bitch to rest your thumb on. After awhile I got used to it though. I taped a thumbrest on the bass the first day I got it to see if I should screw it in. I didn't like it. Now I need to sell it.
I have an Epiphone EB-0 to which I've added a bridge pickup, so it's similar to the SG in terms of thumb placement. My thumb usually wanted to be between the pickups, so I added a plastic thumbrest I got from a music store. Later I replaced it with a rosewood thumbrest from classicguitarboxes.com, also for sale on ebay under the name "pablovibe." The plastic worked fine, but the wood feels better. (More recently, I also added the Hipshot bridge, but haven't got it set up yet.) The original Epi pickup was horribly microphonic, so I immediately replaced it with a Model One, which was definitely a huge improvement. I can't speak about the original Gibson neck pickup. The pickup I added at the bridge was a very cheap Stewmac mini-humbucker, and it sounds surprisingly good. I think the Stewmac pickup was available only in black, but so was the Model One. I was planning to look into the Rio Grande Pitbull if the Stewmac thing didn't work out, but haven't felt the need. I've also bought the Gibson SG version, but I haven't taken delivery of it yet. I'm sure I'll do some mods, like adding a thumbrest and changing the bridge, but I was hoping I wouldn't need to replace the pickups. Can you say why you don't like the original pickups?
I've got an SG Supreme (GOW week 1). I'm not crazy about the bridge p/u solo - but I have 7 other 2 p/u basses and I don't like any of them w/ the bridge p/u solo either. I just consider the bridge volume control to be another tone control to be used with the neck p/u always on at some level. When thought of like that - I think the bridge p/u is perfectly fine - wouldn't consider changing it.
I also have a Dimarizo Model One PU lying around. Would it be a huge improvement over the stock neck PU in the Reissue? please let me know if you want to sell your neck pickup!
I find no need for that pickup. I tend to lean toward a phat, low end to the point of mud sound than a focused tone with any high end. I also hate the drop in volume when both pickups are on.
I've just ordered an ebony thumbrest with 2 stainless steel last night from classicguitarboxes.com. It looks pretty cool from the website.
