I don't know whether to get a modulus flea bass 4 or what, I have like $1400 to spend. I want a bass for slap/funk/jazz. Could you help me find a bass. What are the pros and cons for a flea bass?
Well, modulus basses have graphite necks. You should try one before you decide on a modulus. I really like them, but you may or may not.
I A/B'ed a Modulus Q5 vs. a Modulus Flea bass last friday. Also versus a multitude of American/Japanese/Mexican P's and J's. And a stingray 4. My impression is the Q5 is a bad bad bad man. I about caught fire playing it, felt so dang good. The flea bass wasn't as good. But still okay...not in love with the Bart MM...
i actually picked the flea over the q, but thats just me. Personally, its better than anything ive ever played, including things costing over 3 times as much. Its *awesome*.
I have owned both and I would suggest waiting, saving up some money and get a Quantum. They are far superior in every way, IMO. But, also consider a Peavey G5 or the four string version, I played one 2 weeks ago, it has the Cirrus electronics coupled with a graphite composite neck. It is one of the best under $1000 basses i have ever had the pleasure of playing. If I had not gotten my Zon Sonus 5/1 for $900, I would have bought the G5, its THAT good!!!! It all depends on what you like, I think if you try the Flea bass and then try a Peavey G bass, you will buy the Peavey, they are better to my ears....
I love my flea It just came home today actually. The people at modulus really took care of me getting it fixed. Great funk tone, and its flexible enough to do more than that. Erin
The Bart version is the most unspectacular bass that Modulus makes IMHO. Although I would like to try one with the LP pickup. Too bad you can't get LP's any more.
Mine had an LP pickup, hated it. Even though I got it at cost at $720 new with case, I still returned it.
The LP really had no low end, kind of a low mid honk to it, and the highs were very nasal. The Bart equipped Fleas seem to be good on the lows, but have weak mids. I would say a very hollow scooped sound. That would work for some slappers, but I like a cut around 800-900Hz, not at 400-500 where I would say the dip is in the Barts...I prefer the Barts over the LP I had in the Flea(I like LP's in other basses though), but I am a tad bit predjudice towards them(Barts) after selling my Lakland...and if I were to get a Flea, I would get the Basslines option. Basslines seem to be a good choice for this bass, technically. I have not played a Flea with Basslines.
Yeah, with the Basslines MM pickup, they would probably sound pretty good. IMHO that's the most MM sounding aftermarket pickup there is.
The Basslines Music Man pickup currently offerred on the Flea Bass is a custom model specially designed for the Flea.
Is there any way to put an EB pickup in a Flea bass? Are they the same size, so you could even take one out of a stingray and put it in the Flea?
if you have the bartolini pre amp in it, i think you can get almost any pickup of the mm variety and use it in that bass. I really like the one in my bass though. I ordered the basslines, but i think i got the bart. Either way it sounds really nice
