Inherited 4 of these working Eminence bass 10" drivers (not blown, show continuity with ohm meter) but they have lots of staining... possible mold.

Affect the sound? Clean the stains? how? Don't bother?

Not sure how you’d clean something like that. I’d probably leave it. Maybe put it in the direct sunlight for a spell?

    Leave it alone.

  5. You can clean it with 90% alcohol. That will evaporate quickly & will kill any mold. It may not remove the stain. Don’t use it on the flexible black part. Nor on any glued parts.

Some of the binders and pigments in pulped paper cones are soluble in isopropyl alcohol. I wouldn't recommend it.

One thing I always wonder when someone posts they have old speakers but no cab is what happened to the original cab?
In this case I think whatever peed on these cones destroyed the original cab. ;)

You might want to try this. I’ve been collecting antiquarian books for over 25 years. Sometimes the pages can be stained, molded or foxed (acid in the paper turns brown). I’ve been experimenting with different things to remove the staining. Below is a picture of a book from 1851. Notice how much cleaner the page is on the left. I used hydrogen peroxide (2%) with 1/3 baking soda. Dip a cotton ball in the solution, squeeze it out so it is just damp, and lightly paint it over the molded area. You can dry it with a warm blow dryer. You may notice a light dust of baking soda that can be brushed off with a soft, dry paint brush. All I can say is it works great for paper.

This cabinet smells of old motor oil and the bassist that used it probably played hundreds of outdoor gigs in southern Cal and stored it in the back of his car. In addition, the baffle board is loose and the carpet is worn off in the back and there is structural damage to the plywood layers, exposed to the elements.

I cleaned 2 moldy & dusty old Sunn drivers with a very slow, patient, judicious use of a *slightly* damp sponge (meaning, water, good old H2O), going slowly so as not to wet the cone or even get close to wetting it. At first it was more in the vein of testing a small area to see what would happen... and as nothing bad happened, I kept going. It took time but they cleaned up well and the drivers work perfectly. The sponge got dirty and nasty even with this careful method, so I know I was removing... something... don't want to know what it was. I also replaced the foam batting which smelled nasty as well, and generally cleaned inside and out.

If it’s oil, it will never clean up.

Leave the cab in the sun for as many hours as possible for several days. UV rays will kill whatever the smell it. Tighten up the baffle board. Install the speakers after brushing them off the with paintbrush. Make a dark speaker gril . Let it eat.

I suggest getting the cab cleaned/tightened up, +1brush the speakers off with a paint brush, install speakers and test with your amp to make everything works before doing any finish work.

Will live with them as is although perhaps a super damp sponge just to rough plow?
