So today I was playing at moderate volume using a Crate B200XL head and my G-Bass. After a little while I started getting some cutting in and out sometimes with some staticy feedback. I had my girlfriend play some while I pushed on the input plate on the back of the cabinet, and there was some huge staticy feedback. She then says "Oh my God, honey, the thingy is lighting up!" I said yeah that's probably the limit light on the amp or something. She says "No, the speakers". So I go around to the front and unplug the bass, drop the cable on the ground. After sitting there for a moment it fed again and I saw a huge flash behind all the speakers. I've never seen anything so magnificent looking in my life. Anyway as cool as it looked for a second, obviously there is a problem somewhere in the cabinet. I removed the back plate and the attenuator control and input assembly look ok. No blackening or marks on the PCB. Fuses are in tact. Now I'm thinking it might have been the tweeter? So I use my trusty cell phone flashlight to notice the tweeter has all sorts of tape on it. One of the leads is taped on, which I figured may have come loose at one point. Then I noticed tape from the leads going around to the front of the tweeter. It doesn't occur to me this is standard procedure so I'm asking here. Could the tweeter have been damaged somehow and some guy duct taped it as a repair? Would a tweeter cause my whole cabinet to light up? I'm putting in a link to a picture. I took it with my phone but it's 5mpix. I had to use candlelight setting which made the entire bottom of the shot black, but the top part is the horn and the tape is on the right connector and goes around the front on that side. It's the best photo I could include. Thanks for any advice, as I really don't want to get a new cabinet. Scott http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m7/Uribam/SNC00130.jpg
Through your whole post you never said if everything works or not. I was thinking maybe the tweeter has a bulb in the protection circuit.
Yeah everything does work. Also you're very wise. I did know there was a bulb in the protection circuit for the tweeter. It seemed to have misplaced itself in my memory till y our post. You sir, are the man. Scott
The amazing thing is the bulb is fine. It lit up my cabinet a few times. I appreciate your help in the matter. Maybe this should be moved to the bass humor thread. Now I'm going to have to build my own cab with internal lighting that triggers itself with bass response! That would be nifty =) Scott
