What do you mean by most functional? Do you mean the effect we use the most?

In that case, it's overdrive and wah.

Compression too, if you consider that an effect.

    Chorus seems somewhat popular also.

At home I use every weird effect I can get my hands on.

At gigs, I'm settling in on just a wah pedal.

Playing up near the bridge on my P bass for a more "guitar like" tone. For example, the intro to "Blowing High Dough" by the Tragically Hip.

overdrive is essential for me. then its the occasional wah, and compression if i'm not too lazy to bring it.

i use my wah more than anything else. My delay pedal comes in a close second followed by my flanger that i never use

I've most likely used chorus more than anything else in my "career" (although never having a decent overdrive/distortion until recently might have an effect on that ratio), followed by Whammy octave effects (+1 for pseudo eight-string, -1 for covering the low end and "Sledgehammer"-type playing) and various synths.

  10. For the moment, I use no effects. Someday, I'd like to have an octaver and an overdrive for occasionnal use.

I'd keep compression for studio use only.

Why? I almost never run through a compressor.

Three effects, very versatile too. I don't need more for now I think, I use them once in while, when duty calls for it. ;)

Chorus, Octaver, Autowah (All three EBS pedals)

Those effects are great for just enhancing some parts in a song.

Combining? ....... the list is endless of personal sounds!
