Most numbers of strings on a bass ever made ?

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by Silverstar, Sep 2, 2002.

  1. Hi folks !

Just wanted to know if 9 is still the record or is there some freak building 10, 11 or 12 (I mean non-doubled).
    If so, pics, pics, pics
And please, touchstyle instruments don't count;)

    Here's an 11-string beast. Is it a bass? I don't know... :)

  4. The scale looks way to short to be a bass

Well, now you get into trying to define what a bass is. Seems like all multistringed basses start stretching the accepted view a bit when you take them into the solo area. The instrument above is 28" scale, they call it a baritone, that could perhaps be acceptable as a bass to some.

Well, I know Warr makes some 15, 16 and I think I saw a 17 string...of course, I dunno if you call those basses as much as touch style instruments.

    Same for me.
18 strings with 2 octave and 1 bass strings on a 6 stringer.
And it's a real instrument, not a tap thing

OK, it's *only* nine strings, but it's crazy! I haven't paid attention to this before, it's amazing. Is it possible to actually play these things?

    OK, if non-basses are allowed...

    Found on the net:
    --------------------------------------
The teaser: Name the musical instrument with the largest number of strings.

Answer: Nazim Ozel's Semi-Civilized Tree, although a one-off, has been played in concert, and has 500 strings, tuned to various scales! Most contenders guessed the instrument with the largest number of strings to be the piano (220 strings, hit by 88 keys).
    --------------------------------------

I have not been able to find a picture unfortunately, only this description: "a branch cluster from a live oak tree, stripped of its bark and strung with strings in every possible direction to create a kind of three-dimensional harp".

I would love to see it!

  17. There will be more strings in this thread than any bass every made, I hope that helps.

I need one of those! Where can I get one?

  19. Crazy stuff you all found ! Thanx a lot for you efforts.
My dream would be a 12er non doubled to I would have every tone as a string (tuned from low C# to high G#). If I ever get a millionaire I will let someone build this for me :D
