I need some help from anyone in the Dallas area. I just found out that I am moving to the Dallas area. I'll be working downtown and I am looking at houses in the Allen/Plano area. I should be down there late January 06. I'm breaking the news to my band tonight at practice and am not looking forward to it. What are some local resources, online or printed, for locating other musicians? I'm thinking about waiting 6 months before trying to hook up with another band and in the meantime taking some lessons. I've heard about the Gypsy Tea Room and another venue that escapes me at the moment. But are there venues that support local music? if so what are they. Lastly, what is the local music scene like? Thanks, Steve
Hello from Dallas, Gypsy tea room ,curtain club, indigo club, and most of the deep ellum clubs are all about the alternative punk & rap. But there are a few cool jazz & blues dives all throughout the area along with some cool listening rooms and festivals etc.... I'm still fairly new here and it really is a huge place... I've been using www.musicians.net to do all my networking and advertisement. Cool site ... I guess it's kind of like a musicians union op. The best rehearsal facility's in town can be found at universal rehearsal off of marksville.... They also have Locations in Garland. Plano is a beautiful town BTW. I'm probably not the best person to give you info but that's all I got. Peace & good luck!
+1 for Universal. You could also check out dallasmusician.com . As for lessons, try John Adams, Phil at Larry Morgan Music in Garland, or Basso Gruvitas from TB. All are excellent players. Larry Morgan is probably the best place in the area for gear without going to Austin.
Man, think long and hard about moving to Plano, let alone Allen if you are going to be working downtown. Thats a hell of a drive everyday depending on where in Plano you buy a house. If you move to Allen you are a masochist.
Heh, thats interesting. I will be moving down to Richardson in Jan 06. I would like to hook up with some musicians doing world music or something like that, but I doubt there is much of that going on down there. Its always a struggle to find musicians you like playing with in a new place. I have been in Norman for a year and a half and am just now getting enough contacts to keep me playing when I want to. Its going to be hard to move down there on such short notice, I really feel like I'm letting the guys I have been playing with down. I guess thats just life. Are there any dallas area music forums? It would be nice if there was an online compilation of local music forums from all around. I know plano is a little south, but Denton has a great music scene if you are into the indy type stuff. I think jazzish music is also pretty big. Really just the more artsy stuff I guess. Good luck with the move. Bryan
I'm in richardson, And yea that is a looong drive to work everyday if you choose to move to Plano. I was really surprised at all the available musicians here. I will say that there is a shortage of "good" drummers and bass players though. Hey, when is the next dallas are GTG anyways?
I just moved to Dallas in late August and have been pleasantly surprised at the diversity of the music scene. It didn't take me long at all to find a great band to be a part of. There are plenty of bands looking for good bass players here in Big D! As far as places to live, Plano and Allen are a LONG way from Downtown. You probably want to look in the Uptown, Lower Greenville, or other neighborhoods that are inside the 635 beltway. Other neighborhoods/towns that aren't too far from downtown include Farmers Branch, Addison and Richardson. I live in North Dallas between Addison and Richardson and it takes me between 20-30 minutes to commute into downtown. Good luck and welcome to Dallas!
Thanks for the responses so far and your concern about the commute. We are looking at Allen/Plano due to the rating of the schools. I am not planning on driving. The DART light rail stops one block from the office downtown and less than 5 min from the neighborhood we are looking at. Plus the company I work for subsidizes mass transit.
In that case check out Richardson as well. They also have good schools and your commute time will be cut in half.
