moving up from the SXs

  1. I'm already gas'n for another bass. I have an SX 4+1 Jazz that's stock and a black SX 4 Jazz frankenbass; fretless neck and matching head, P pup at bridge with Warmoth pearloid pickguard. Looking at Brice, Peavey, Ibanez and Yamaha 5's with actives. Any opinion on how the Brice stands up in this crowd?

From what I hear, Brice is a very good company that is doubted on because it's a pretty unknown brand. Never tried one though so dont take my word for it.

  3. Nobody here has any experience with Brice?

No experience with Brice, but I love my Ibanez SRX 590, ATK 700BLM, and ATK 750KA. A couple of people have snagged the ATK 700 for around $200 off Ebay recently, which is an absolute steal!

  5. Look around for older American Peavey's. For 2-300 bucks you can end up with one HELL of a great playing bass.

I had a couple of Brice basses a few years ago. Good value for what they are. I wasn't crazy about the sound. I also didn't care for the string spacing. Way to tight for my liking. But some people may love it. IIRC they are 17mm? Anyways, I found with mine that they needed a good set up. Also ditch the factory strings. If you wanted to upgrade the electronics and pick ups, it would go a long way to making the bass sound better. Just my opinion. Honestly though I would try to find a store and play some Peavey, Ibanez and Yamaha basses and see what you think. As a former Brice owner, they give you good bang for the buck, but I no longer have them, nor would I buy one again. I found that I actually like the SX basses better.
