I bought a Creative Zen, and while I've had some trouble with mine (had to send it back to Creative to be fixed) which was apparently a lemon, I would recommend it as a great alternative to the IPod. Much cheaper with a 20gig hard drive. And no, these don't skip, because they store the songs to be played on flash memory after they are pulled off the HD.

They do the same thing as the standard flash memory players. But when put up against a player with a 20 gig hard drive... I think the MP3 player will win hands down. I have my entire music collection on one player that I can fit in my hand!

Why kid yourself? I got a 30gb and never looked back. It was one of the best purchases I ever made in my life.

    Yeah, iPod is teh win

My sister just got a 15 gig one, its unreal, never had a problem(I've been helping her set it up and transfer music)

It is quiet as hell, it has a good output level, the new dock that it comes with is ultra awesome(plug into a stereo) It's TINY, the new ones are ridiculously small, not saying that the old ones were big. The backlight is excellent, the controls are very responsive, it weighs virtually nothing. and I could go on and on and on.

the ONLY thing that isn't that appealing is, that all the awesome features, ease-of-use, speed comes at a little bit of a premium price

    $300 for the 15 gig.
    $400 for the 30 gig.

mp3 players do not skip. I bought one at Kmart when they were going out of business in this area, for 70% off. Added a 128MB smart media card to it, and I can take 2 hours of music with me wherever I go.

I am in the process of converting all of my CD's to mp3, and when I do, they will go into storage. Every time I buy a new CD, I convert it and then put the CD away, so it won't get scratched and the jewel box wan't get messed up.

  10. I got an Archos Jukebox Recorder 20 GB with the replacement firmware by Rockbox (must install this, the Archos firmware is useless), and never even looked at an Ipod. It's about US$240.

EDIT: and it runs about 8 hours on 4 standard MiMH AA's. You can buy extra sets of batteries everywhere.
