MRX Bass D.I+ m80 OR SansAmp Character Series-VT Bass Deluxe

How many tone options do you need? The MXR will give you 3 at your feet (off/on/distortion), whereas the VT Bass Deluxe will give you 6 presets (which you can customize to your liking). The MXR is also about half the cost. Both are durable, well-reviewed, and have DI out. One might serve you better, with time, as your tastes and gigs change, however. As a coverband player in my 40's, I have used 5 out of the 6 presets with some regularity (usually only 3), with #6 being the ultimate face-melting distortion, if the mood ever strikes.

 

I bought the MXR M80 based not on price, but on already being happy with my basic EBMM + Ampeg sound. Sansamp/VT stuff has its own personality; the M80 has a color button if you want added warmth, but otherwise largely leaves your basic sound as is. In short, I wanted to sound like ME, not like a VT.

Of course, if you like the Sansamp/VT sound, and especially if you want/need the extra presets, then by all means get the VT Deluxe, and more power to you. Different strokes and all that.
