I acquired this beauty in a trade deal. Here is the thread with details and pics: TRADED - MTD 535-24 Flamed Redwood As stated in this thread the previous owner had the neck converted from fretless to fretted. I can testify that the result is top notch. The intonation is spot on and the fretwork is immaculate. Please note that there is no zero fret as usually found on Mike's necks. More pics below. Price is lowered into deliberate temptation range. No trades please. Shipping free CONUS. {} {} {} {} {}
curious.. how does the missing zero fret affect the intonation? and if its spot on what was done to compensate?
that's the nicest redwood top I've seen - wish I could afford it! As a fretless I believe it would be scaled without the zero fret to begin with
{} A fretless has just a nut and no zero fret. I found the pic above in a TB for sale thread advertising a fretless 535. When adding frets to a fretless fingerboard there isn't space for a zero fret. Can someone more knowledgable chime in with a better explanation? Using a tuner to check intonation on the fretted neck confirms its accuracy. As stated by the previous owner in his thread the Buzz Feiten tuning system is not preserved. And please, no trades.
That used to be my bass! I can vouch for the fact that it intonates perfectly, sounds great and looks amazing! GLWTS!
On a fretless you typically want to have the nut slot cut deeper than on a fretted bass. Since a zero fret would set the string height higher than a fretless player would typically want, I'm sure that Mike just build the neck/fingerboard so the witness point for strings is at the finger board side of the nut (which would be correspond exactly where the zero fret would have been set). Plus, while open strings resonating off of a zero fret matches the sound of the strings resonating off the other frets (as you ascend the finger board), on a fretless you would prefer that the open strings resonate off of non-metallic material. Beautiful bass! Definitely one of the nicest looking redwood tops that I've seen. GLWTS
Not interested in the Warrior but thank you for your offer. No, I don't know whether the fingerboard was lined. But you might try PM'ing the seller in the purchase thread I linked in my above post.
I've had 7 offers, 3 for trades and 4 for less money. I turned them all down - those for less money because I find the inevitable haggling distasteful. I accepted the latest offer, feeling that perhaps I needed to give buyers more of a chance. The haggling began and I answered many questions but was ultimately unable to close the deal. When I reluctantly called an end to the stalling the potential buyer claimed that his situation had changed and he needed to withdraw the offer for lack of cash due to personal reasons. I'm sure every seller on TB knows the drill and can relate to my whining . So the MTD is back on the block. $2800 shipped CONUS, no trades please.
