It kills me to do this, but GAS is getting the best of me! This MTD 535 was built by Michael Tobias for the 1997 NAMM show. The serial number is #181. Mike's NAMM basses are special, and this one is no exception. The myrtle burl top on this is exhibition-grade, and the pictures do it no justice. The body is tulipwood, with a wenge/wenge neck. If you are looking for the classic MTD Norm Stockton tone, look no further - this bass has it! My bass was built in the same period as Norm’s well known blueburst MTD #252, with the exact same woods.

It’s in great condition, with normal player wear but no major scars. This one was built before Mike started using the Buzz Feiten tuning system. The matching myrtle burl knobs were custom made by Pete Skjold, who is now doing the wood knobs directly for MTD. The bass also comes with the original MTD knobs, and the original MTD hardshell case. I bought this bass last year from my buddy, fellow TBer Tom Bowlus.

I’m selling this bass specifically to get a new Ken Smith Black Tiger, so I’m not interested in trades unless you have a recent top of the line (either Black Tiger or Elite) Smith in excellent condition. I’m selling the MTD for $2,800 plus shipping, US sales only.

I think I need to block all threads that say MTD in the title... that bass is simply stunning. I'd almost consider selling my children for that... :D

I've personally checked this bass out and it ROCKS. In fact, when I got it, the output jack was a bit worn, so I put a brand new Switchcraft jack in it (same as original, just new).

I also believe this one has a slightly different preamp in it than is currently used, and it's got a really cool tone. Not super different... maybe just a little "warmer" sounding. Very nice!

    VERY rare bass!

    FYI.

Like Vic, I've played this one when it was Tom's, and it sounds beautiful, as well as looks fabulous. Good luck with the sale Jason.

Bump for a killer bass. If I did not have so many irons in the fire right now, I'd snap it back up, myself, but it seems that fate desires that this bass touch someone else, so I offer my congratulations to its future owner!

And yes, that top is bad @$$.
