MTD 535 Spalt on koa, wenge/wenge

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by Jonathan Starr, Nov 11, 2003.

  1. My new fretted 535 MTD is on the way West to me.

It's spalted maple on a koa body blank. The koa came from an ancient tree cut for a Hawaiian Canoe 3 hours hike above my house here in remote East Maui. The neck is wenge/wenge.

I'll post my impressions when it arrives.

I'll post my impression right now:

NICE one man! I'm usually not big on spalt, but that just rocks. Let us know how she plays when you get your hands on her.

  3. Yet another beautiful MTD.

Wicked looking bass man! Of all the bass there are, I think MTD's have one of my favorite body shapes. Amazing!

Jonathan that is a BEAUTY! How on earth do you find that wood? (although not out of a coffeetable this time?)

Isn't Koa really tricky to obtain?

Anyway, great looking (and hopefully great sounding) MTD. Hopefully my MTD doesn't feel shy after seeing it.

  9. Thanks for the nice comments, guys & gals. I can't wait for Mr Fedex to do his thang.

I feel like the guy way back when waiting for delivery of his new Stradivarius (except that may have been before Fedex?).

In the words of Mike T.

"extra strings in case pouch. Enjoy it!
    It is an amazing bass!!!"

Ok, I think I'm going to have to change my submission in that "best looking bass" thread. That is really amazing. I sure hope it exceeds all your expectations!
  11. Here are some close ups of the body & head:

The spalt maple came from Mike's stock. I think he has some more.

That is exquisite! It's right up there with the spalted Sadowskys (two 24-frets and a Vintage P, owned by Rader and JimS and one other TBer whose nick I've forgotten).

Wow.....just........wow.....that is simply the most beautiful, enchanted bass I've seen.

As someone who was born on Hawaii, but left before they got to enjoy it, I have to say that your bass makes me seriously homesick! :(

Will you adopt me, Jonathan? ;) :D

    No, really.
  15. WOW! I'm not a fan of most spalted maple tops, but yours looks really nice.. congrats
  16. Frankly, do you really need that bass??!
If you don't, give it to me!!! RIGHT NOW!!!

    At least I tried...

  17. Jonathan, your new bass is absolutely stunning. Obviously it's a very "connected" instrument given your special koa that was used for the body. Mike hasn't lost his touch, has he? Congrats!!!

After reading your earlier threads regarding the origin of the koa, I was anxiously awaiting *this* thread to see the finished product.

Jonathan, that---------- is----------- Beautiful! Congrats, man! :) :) :)
