    Bear with me ...

I'm the original owner of this bass:

SOLD - BRAND NEW MTD 634 w/Aguilar Pre and VTC Wenge/Walnut NO TOP

I've always been a big fan of Mike Tobias' stuff. Absolute genius with wood.

(Bartolini Fan Boys can sign off now)

I just can't stand the Bart pickup/pre setup that comes with his basses. Just don't like it.

For my tonal needs of course. Golden rule: if you like it, it's good. If you do not like it, it's not good.

    So ...

I bought this bass and had Glen at Austin Bass Traders put an Aguilar pre (w/ VTC) and Bart Pickups.

    Close but no cigar.

So I let it go into the classified ethers. I won't dignify those threads by reposting. You can find them yourself and see all of the 'orginal owner is a jack-knob for daring to mess with the holy Bartolini formula ... blah blah blah'.

    Whatever. Again, their opinions.

I missed this bass though, and so I bought it again. Put a Sadowsky Pre and some Aguilar Single Coil pickups in it.

Wow. This bass is every bit the Sadowsky 6-string had a Warwick Love Child that I envisioned. Clips and pics to come.

    Only problem?

I'm just not the 6-string guy I aspired to be. In the bedroom, it's all good. Love it. Live? Not so much. 5-strings are plenty for me.

    • Bass is still minty fresh
    • Sadowsky Pre with VTC
    • Aguilar Single Coil pickups
    • OHSC
    • Original Paperwork
    • Don't have the little flashlight thingy that lights up the side dots
    • Don't have whatever Bart system that came with it last go around

Pardon my contrarian opinions, and like I said, clips and pics to come

Why on earth would you switch out the magic Bartolinis?

Thin sounding. Awful setup. Just my opinion, coming from the Sadowsky basses which are my main basses.

I have a juiced-up Jazz bass sound, with that Wenge snap that you get out of a Warwick, and I have a VTC I can roll off for Jamerson-type tones. Win win for me.

Just can't do the 6 thing any more.

    Worth mentioning:

I liked the ash/maple MTD 535/635's I had, with the standard Bart Setup. Still wished I had a VTC, but the combo really worked there.

Ditto a Myrtle-body, Wenge Neck MTD 535 with a Bart setup.

With this bass, I didn't like the Aguilar Setup it came with, REALLY didn't like the Bart setup that it came back with, and now, again IMO, have a really killer bass with the Sadowsky/Aguilar setup

Very well put. My comment was a bit facetious, and I meant to quickly post a follow up to clarify. However I was working organizing my workshop and listening to an audiobook (Sharpe’s Havoc, I vehemently recommend the Sharpe series of historical fiction novels) and I plum forgot.

Your reply was quite tactful, and does help us get some insight into your (and therefore the bass’) tonal palette

    Both tracks:

Straight into Garageband iOs iPad App with Apogee thingy.

Track One - Flat everything including bass. Demonstrating pickup/VTC rolloff options.

Track Two - Slappy crappy with some bass/treble boost.

CORRECTION: only at the very end do I boost. More of that to come.

    More to come.

This EQ/Pickup setup just brought this bass alive. Compressed, thick tone with some snap. VTC rolloff you’re into Vintage P/J territory, and that bridge pickup in particular with some volume boost ... OOOH WEEE!!!!

    Maybe it’s Maybelline

I guess I snapped the inactive toggle switch that was my ‘producer’s switch’ at some point. Otherwise the bass is undinged and flawless
