Ok, I've been looking to buy an MTD Kingston for a while now.

I found a dealer on their website and it said they just had the Kingston... So I go. And find that they have both a Kingston and a Grendel!

The guy offered me the Grendel 5 w/gig bag for $600!!!

Or the Kingston 4 with HSC, cord, MTD shirt and hat for $600 HA!

Now, I can get the Kingston from a guy I know that works at Musicians Friend, for $350.

Which do you think is the better deal?

The Grendel at $600 is right at the top of my price range, so this is a difficult decision.

Oh yea, by the way, I love the sound of that Grendel, even through the crappy combo with the 8" in it.

    Thanks.

I just read up on the Grendel.

The one I played was sn#000049B
I don't know how many zeroes in front sorry.

But it was made in the Czech Republic and had the Michael Tobias sig.

Now my point, the website says that it has active controls, and the one I played didn't. It had the two J pups but only had 2 volumes and a tone control. Nor did it have the little 3way selector (for tone control, not pup selection). Just wondering if it just just a little older.

  5. I'd go with the Grendel too.

    * Active EQ
    * Looks cooler
    * 2 pickups for more tonal choices
    * Gets more looks from chicks (just kidding)

The Grendel with a wenge neck or fingerboard would DEFINITELY be the one to pick up.

I play a pre-MTD Grendel, like the one you're looking at, I think. It is a great instrument! The pre-amp is great, and the mid-contour switch is very useful to get that "Jazz bass" vibe.

Great workmanship, great playability, overall a very good buy for the money. I got mine pretty cheap as well, and it's the bass I've had for the longest period of time (it's nearly 4 years, now!!).

    Good luck!

Well, the one I'm looking at (as I said in a previous post) doesn't have the mid switch, and it has the MTD logo on the headstock.

you are probably looking at an MTD Beast- i sold a bunch at a blowout price of $450- a GRENDEL at $600 is a steal, but it IS active and has bass/treble and a mid switch- if the bass doesnt have this, its not a Grendel

  9. Weren't Beasts discontinued?

Hmmm. Where'd ya find a new Grendel for six bills? I was looking into one for $900. Black quilt (smoke) with a maple board. I talked to Adrian and he said the Grendel really kicks ass (or something close). I never did commit to buying it though. The two J syle pups scare me for the style I play (hard rock/new metal). It was an internet deal and I couldn't get my hands on one to try.

Let me know where you found such a good deal. For $600 I might rethink my position.

So is a Beast at $600 a good deal?
Or would the Kingston at $350 be a better deal?

Does the Beast have a wenge board? I couldn't tell if the board was rosewood or wenge.

So, I guess the $600 dollar price was for a beast and not a Grendel? That would make more sence. If you can get the Grendel for $600 that is the deal. $600 for a beast doesn't sound like a deal at all since Adrian tells us that he sold a few new ones for $450. The Kingston for $350 is quite a better deal considering the regular Musician Friend price is $499.

    Sound right?

    ok- here goes:
a Beast for $600 is a ripoff... read again- i sold dozens at $450 brand new, blow out price-
a GRENDEL ( new) at $600 is a steal- but it must be a true Grendel- a Kingston for $350 is a steal- any questions?? peace!- A.

let me ammend that, $600 may not be a ripoof- they did list for $999, but they can be had a bigger discounts for sure...

Guess my only question is for the original poster. What website dealer offered you the Grendel for $600? As I said I was looking at a Grendel for $900. True the one I was looking at has the nicer quilted top and a maple fret board which are both extra. Still a new Grendel for $600 is very appealing.

I don't know if you are looking but...
I've got a Grendel I have to sell.
(but I don't want to) It's red with
    flame maple top. Wenge fingerboard.
Still has the original strings on.
It plays great up and down. I got
it from the hands of Mike Tobias.
I'm asking $775.00 with gig bag.
I ordered an upright bass from
Germany a year ago and the rate
of exchange has changed alot since.
I need the money for the upright.
