Anyone own one of these basses? I'm looking to purchase one but am curious what some opinions are before hand. There's a nice 5 string at the local Guitar Center in Va. Beach for $499.

I have a Kingston 5 Fretless. I LOVE the neck on it. Feels really good. I think it sounds good, but I have the upgraded Bart pre in it. I don't know what they sound like passive, but you can always drop one in for cheap if you need more oomph.

For the price, I don't think you will find a better 5 string bass.

    Just my opinion, of course

Well, I'm lovin' the nice wide neck! You can put a pre-amp in it? Active PU's and all that?

You shouldn't need to replace the pickup to add a preamp. There aren't that many pickups out there that are a direct replacement for the 5-string MM style, but the stock pickup will work just fine with most preamps.
