This is honestly apples to oranges lol. Two COMPLETELY different approaches to building a bass. Tobias: - neck-thru (except for Killer B's) - laminated bodies (" ") - dual coil pickups (" ") - TCT preamp MTD: - bolt-on (for the most part) - solid bodies - reverse p, split coil pickups (except for the supers) - NS3TMB family preamp They both have their strengths. The Tobias' tend to be the brighter of the two (thanks to that treble shelf on the TCT mid knob) and they have that typical sweet high-end you expect from dual coils. MTD's tend to be much more focused thanks to the bolt-on necks and the split coil pickups. You can now, sort of, compromise btwn the 2 by asking for super (dual coil) pickups in the normal location, but you still won't have the TCT flavor.
Both. I have a Gibson era Tobias and a MTD Czech, if these are the lower grade models then I'll be well pleased to get a 'proper' one or two.
All the drop shoulder pickups were dual coils. No one really knows when Mike made the change to reverse p.
