muffled string or x when writen on tabs

    put your finger on top of the string, and pluck it, it might sound kind of like a quiet cowbell

    i believe its a ghost note.

    you take your fretting hand and lightly place it over the note. you dont want to let the note ring out or hear a harmonic, you want to achieve a percussive type tone.

    for a good audable example listen to Rocco Prestia from Tower of Power. He uses them all the time.

    the symbol for it is the same on tabs as it is in notation
