I may be going to look at an Italian bass this week and I'm told it has a 6 piece back. I'm just wondering if this (more than 2 or 3 piece) back is fairly common. Is there any inherent problems that could arise frim this ?

This is a common scenario-many of the best Ities have mulltiple pieced backs[tops too] Of course, every time you increase the number of seams you increase the chance of one of them letting go but I wouldn't obsess on this. [Unless the joints appeared iffy to begin with]
