Music Man pickups vs string spacing

The MM type pickup, with the 2 rows of magnets, 2 under each string. How does it affect the sound if the string spacing causes the outer strings to be inside the magnets, not perfectly over them. In other words, if the string spacing is slightly closer than what the pickup was intended for.
