Decal on back of head stock started 1987.(before = no decal)
Decal on front of head stock brings it to 1987-1992.
3 EQ preamps started in 1987.

Hello everyone new Stingray owner, just got my bass yesterday. The preamp and pups need to be swapped out to be at 100%. It's an older stingray so the years and use have worn her down a bit. Thing is I'd like to put the preamp and pickup from a Sterling in it. I like how that preamp boosts the mids and has a series/parallel option. Does Ernie Ball sell those options I've looked around and can't find them. I've looked on Reverb/EBay and not much luck. also does anyone have one they'd like to part with. Thanks for any help you guys can give.

You need to try a Special. that was the story of my life too. I loved them in the hands of others but for me it wasn't a good fit physically and I found them to be just too aggressive. Then along came the Specials and I had struck gold!!!

Ok I stand corrected I looked up the serial number and it's dated April 4, 1989. I saw a neck stamp when I took the neck off almost 30 years ago. I guess time has clouded that memory.

Just curious, do you know what year the mute bridge was changed?

Gents, I could use some help. Recently I found online what I thought was a really cool Stingray bass and decided to jump on it. This is a late 80's Stingray, and has clearly seen a lot of use in the last several decades. Supposedly, the bass was re-strung when I got it, but something doesn't seem right. Here are some pics:
Has some wear, but it's in pretty good condition for it's age and it's use. Feels great to play, balances nicely and has a good neck to it. 2 Band Pre-Amp, and the odd thing is there is no center detent. Is the preamp boost only like a Spector? Or is boos/cut and just the pots don't have the detent?
The other weird thing, is the strings themselves don't seem to be acting the same. When I play the E string, it sounds almost like playing a flatwound string, or maybe with a mute engaged, but as far as I can tell it isn't. The G sounds similar in this regard. The A-String however sounds completely different. Tons of zing to the point that I feel like I need to EQ a bit out, but then there is almost no high end out of the E. The D string is also has more zing, thought the A really stands out on it.
Really hoping I didn't buy a lemon honestly. My first thought is to get some new strings that I put on, and give it a good cleaning before deciding more.
Besides the strings, can you think of anything else that might be causing this? What do I need to know about the Preamp and the bridge? I am new to MM basses.

Just off the top of my head, you might want to check the string height at the pick up. Maybe adjust the strings at the bridge accordingly.
Changed the battery too, the old one was in there since July of 21. I'm really leaning into the idea of new strings. I just feel like even playing it unplugged most of the strings feel a little dead. I have 6 month old Lo Riders on my P-Bass and they feel brighter and more lively than these supposedly brand new ones.
I don't think the 2 band pre-amps have center detents. It doesn't on my US SUB and IIRC, and I'm probably wrong, they are boost/cut.
Far as the diff in string tone you don't really know about new set stringing 'till you do it yourself.
I think you have an early pre- '85 (headstock logo) refinished trans blue. Unless it's obvious I doubt the pickup's been altered. But pull it and the pre to see if there's signs of re wiring.
A little research into some older threads reminded me that in the 2 band pre-amps Bass is boost only and Treble is boost/cut.
