    Hi

I am hoping someone can suggest an alternative preamp for my 2008 Stingray 4 string 3EQ. I am not a fan of the tone of the stock preamp. I love the action and the neck of this bass and she looks badass. Just want to find a tone I would be happy with. I have attached a pic of my bass so you can see the pickup and control configuration. nice.jpg

I love the stock tone of the pickups and pre amp.

I'm going to subscribe just to hear some ideas.

Love the pg and control plate! Like to get a set for my SR. Where did you get them?

Thx Gil! Definitely good to know.

Also, just wondering and comparing notes. What are you finding lacking about your tone?

I like my 3-band as it is but would love to try a stock 2-band to hear the differences. Where to find such a thing though cause I guess EBMM doesn't sell them. :(

I’ve had both Duncan and Nordstrand and they both sounded a little different but good!

@gilthethethrill, it kind of depends what you're after and what the stock preamp does (or doesn't do) that makes you want to change it.

@Heavy Blue, there's a bunch of companies making the 2B preamp design and doing fantastic with it. Nordstrand, East, Mojotone to name a few.

  10. John East does a three band EBMM preamp that is a combination of the two band plus a mids control that doesn’t impact the circuit if it is centred/neutral. Best of both worlds!

Reason for not liking the tone of the stock 3 band eq? I might have had a faulty preamp. I'm not sure. The higher tones seemed distorted by the preamp.

Anyways. I tried something this weekend. Removed the preamp assembly which includes the 3 band eq and volume module. Installed a 500k volume pot directly to the pickup. Sounded good. Very hot pickup. I'm not completely sold on it. I might look for a used East EBMM preamp.
