MXR Super Comp: this is a great compressor, it is fairly quiet, it squeezes really good, gives you lots of sustain and you get lots of punchiness out of it , but just like the dyna comp you will lose a little low end until you a bring the 3rd knob (attack) down, and the sensitivity up, and this makes it almost transparent, and very clean with all of your normal low end, almost like it is not even on, in my opinion the pedal fixes the issues the dyna comp had. i originally had the BBE opto stomp, for one day, and it was a great compressor esp. when used with my american fender jazz deluxe, it was quiet and smooth, but My USA G&L L2500 has really hot Pickups, and i needed more squashing then what the BBE could give me, so i took The BBE back to Guitar center where i ordered it from and went to another local store and got The MXR Super comp, anyway just wanted to say they are both Great, but if you have really hot pickups on your bass, the MXR might just be for you, and if you get this Pedal remember the attack knob makes all the difference in the World. Aguilar Tone Hammer: I love this thing, it does not color your tone at all, it is really quiet when engage is on, the EQ is awesome esp. the mid and Mid Freq. it really shapes the tone nicely and is very modern sounding. When you turn the AGS on it gives you a very tubey vintage type of tone, and when you turn the gain up you get a very warm overdrive/distortion tone that is killer, this thing will never leave my pedal board. The only Negative is (if you call it that): 1.When AGS is on you get a little hiss, but its not that bad at all, and is to be expected, it behaves allot like a tube amp would when AGS is on. 2.When AGS is on the volume goes up a bit, but to me it is not that big a deal, you can just leave AGS on and keep the gain low and it is pretty quiet and warm 3. The battery compartment is fine i guess just a little odd, also it eats batteries for lunch, but it is 18 volts what do you expect, i highly recommend getting the Power Adapter with it, no one locally in Las Vegas has 18 volt power adapters for this, i can order it off the internet, and i am going too, just save yourself the time, and get the adapter with it, if you dont you will be getting one soon after buying it. i hope this helps people, and i want to thank bongomania for helping me find the right compressor, you rock!
i think you will like it, i tried several pre amp pedals, and it was better in my opinion than most, esp. given that it is a 3 band eq, most are 2 band.
i got mine today the one problem is i cant seem to get the batteries to fit do they go at the front of the battery draw thing-a-ma-bob?
i got mine to fit in the front battery drawer, i pulled the battery wires over the top of the battery drawer, and then they fit, and the drawer will close with the battery wires pulled over the top, i hope this helps.
This box is great. I have a PBDDI that I have been using for about 2 and a half years. I only really used 2 of the 3 channels one clean and one OD so the AGS is just what I wanted. Also it doesn't suck all of my mids away.
I have an MXR Super Comp from when I was buying guitar effects for guitar. Never thought of trying it on bass. I'll have to give it a try.
Same hear...lemme know what you find. I don't have a bass amp, so it's hard for me to judge when I plug my bass into my guitar combo (which obviously doesn't reproduce low end that well).
i have tried the mxr super comp at home on my small amp, but today i gigged with the mxr super comp and my tone hammer, and it worked out great, but be warned the mxr super comp is very sensitive to the slightest adjustment, it does not take much to get allot compression out of it, it is very powerful, so use it sparingly, and remember the attack and the sensitivity knobs work together, you have to find the right balance between the two to get your perfect level of compression, and also use the output knob sparingly it will get you allot of volume, so be easy on it, i hope this helps. anyway it is working great for me, but what works great for me may not be great for you.
I also wanted to add that if you use the MXR super comp, you have to put it in the front of your pedal chain, for example, my pedal chain is: MXR super comp,Aguilar Tone Hammer, MXR 10 band EQ Pedal, and The BBE sonic Stomp, if i put it after any one of these pedals it will sound cruddy, and slightly distorted, and that was what was happening, so i changed its position several times, and once i put it as the first pedal, it sounded awesome, and worked very well.
I agree. I had used my Compulator more at the end of the chain in the past. Just to balance the whole signal before going to the amp. A couple of weeks ago I put it first in my pedalboard and the difference was amazing. It made wonders for my sound and balances everything plus it adds what I call a little "sparkle" or "sheen" to the sound. I now go Tuner > Compulator > RC Booster > .....
So, I have had my tone hammer since Sunday and here are my thoughts: •it sounds great. I prefer it to my sansamp as it has a mid control so I can cut through a mix better • I like the AGS the volume boost I think is good as I use it as an overdrive effect which I would want to be louder than clean anyway. • it seems to have quite a bit of volume on tap, I have yet to push the master past 12 • the only real negative is the plastic jacks, it feels like aguilar have skimped a little considering this is a (pretty much) $200 pedal, the recessed jacks is a little annoying but not that much if a head ache.
yep, that is exactly what i am doing, logically it seemed to me it would be better towards the end of my chain, but boy was i wrong, it works way better at the front.
i have to agree the recessed jacks are a little annoying, i had to buy some different cords, that were strait instead of the L shape so i could plug it in, and i was thinking the jacks were plastic also, but i was tapping on them to feel if they were plastic or metal, and they felt hard, i wonder if they are just painted black metal instead? anyway, it still feels solid, i hope the pics i sent you helped.
I bought a Super Comp for use with my Jag bass, which is about as hot as pups get in a Fender. The knobs do take tweaking every time things get nudged even a little bit, but when its dialed in its like a punch to the solar plexus. And mine is at the start of my signal chain too. I'm very happy with it, especially since I got it at a ridiculous price.
you could not have said it better, that describes it perfectly, it is really powerful, and a little goes a long way.
