Here is his christmas present. 1994 Mexican Fender Stu Hamm Urge. completely mint, and only $249. It sounds great! Demarzio Jazz Pickups are a nice touch.

Good starter bass? Worth $249? Waddya think?

It seems to be a 32" scale or so and is very light.

Very cool! Is your 10 year old going to be able to play the 34" scale though? I'm thinking that depending on how old my child is if he or she asks to learn bass I would probably get them a short scale.

Edit: nevermind, I totally didn't see that you said it was a 32" inch scale in your original post.

It is a 32 & perfect for him. I played a Fender Jazz near his age & it felt like a tree but I liked it.

Oh, I didn't realize this bass was only 32" inches. Sounds like it is perfect!

    That's what I thought. :hyper:

In this price range and a shorter than 34" scale, I would be looking at a Epi EB or Squier Bronco which I think are inferior. The Urge actually feels like something I could play and gig with.

Are you sure that your 10 YO isn't a TBer?? I hope you didn't spoil the surprise!

p.s. My kids are both musicians and it's something I'm very proud of

Yup, I would agree. Another bass that comes to mind is a short scale SX Jazz, but this bass you bought I'm sure is better than that.

No kids atm but I can only imagine how excited I'll be if I heard that in the future.

One more reason to keep in the backpocket for buying more gear, "But Babe, it's gonna be name here's later on."

  9. lol gotta be a great thing that you're kid asked you that. I'm sure he'll get a great bass instructor.

Both of my boys play. One is 10 and the other turns 12 in a few days. The 10 yr old has a little interest (took some lessons and plays once every week or two). He uses a Yamaha Motion Bass. 32 inch scale, very light, killer tone (has active EMG's), killer MIJ build quality and it works great for him (when he plays). I would recmommend a Yamaha Motion for any kid starting out. It's really the perfect electric for kids (and many adults love them too).

The older one (12) is much more serious. He started playing string bass (upright) @ 10 and started with his elementary school orchestra. He caught on VERY fast and they ask him to also be in the school band (the only kid to play in both the orchestra and band in the whole school).

He then got accepted to a performing arts magnet middle school and plays DB for them. I bought him a nice Englehardt DB that had the works done to it (planed fingerboard, high-end pickup, new nut, etc, etc,). He also plays electric bass, drums and guitar.

It's soooo fun having kids that are interested in music. Both og my sons have "band practice" at my house (I have guitars, amps, basses, drums, PA, etc) with their rock bands. My house is the "cool" house for them and their friends to hang at because of this. Lovin it! Enjoy!!!!!

Hey, I have one of those bases, only in LPB though. The preamps are supposed to be really nice in there too :D
EDIT, looked at the pic better, mine has a 2 band pre, not a VVT set up. Oops!

My 4-year old mentioned that he wants to play drums. Maybe we need to get them together in a few years. ;)
