Hey all - struggled a little with this head and getting a sound I would call my own that I am happy with but I think I have nailed it. My main bass is a Frank Bello Fendo sig - essentially a J bass body with modern P bass neck and PJ pickups. Switched the stock pickups for Dimarzio model J and P. I had always shied away from engaging the "Shape" setting(button out) as it cut mids, but today I thought what the heck and let my ears do the work. My settings as follows sound good in a band setting. Input at 3 o'clock - regularly just touches the red on VU meter. Shape engaged (button out). Valve drive on and between 11 and 12 o'clock. Bass pot - 12 o'clock (but usually to taste) 180 slider - centered 340 slider - up 2 notches Mid pot - 2 o'clock 1.3 slider - centered 2.6 slider - centered Treble pot -12 o'clock Compressor off. Sub-Harmonics - off. Speakers I use are Ashdown ABM 410H x 2. Very pleased.
Very close to how I used to set mine. Try moving that 180Hz slider down just a hair and bump up the 1.3 slider up one notch. I always found that cleared up the sound and made the amp sound a bit more punchy and articulate.
Cheers for that too - I think you had given this advice to me before which is what gave me the kick in the butt to stop thinking about the EQ literally and just use my ears. I'll try your suggestion tomorrow but at this stage I'm very happy with how the tone sits.
