My band recorded a song at practice. Constructive criticism is welcomed.

    Thank you.

  4. Band is solid - although I think it’s a bit rushed compared to the original. Guitarist nails the Bush tone!

vocals - I know, mobile phone recordings are far from ideal - but vocally it’s not there. Harsh, undisciplined, pitchy. Also - lose the music stand!!!! The Band far outplays the Vocal here. Sorry - but that’s my honest take. Your playing and stage presence are very solid. Nice work! Kudos on the mask.

Ditto. Music sounds solid... vocals, he's got some work to do. That can and will make or break a band.

yes - as much as we hate to admit it, vocals are 80-90% of the cover band experience. You can have perfection on your instruments, but if the vocals aren’t good....

Don't apologize. I want to hear the honest take.

I think we tend to play every song a little bit faster than the original recording.

Normally I would say the vocals are one of the strongest points of the band. However, I agree, this is not a strong look. Luckily the singer hasn't been practicing lately because he has a new baby to deal with. Also, as band, we didn't practice for a lot of the original pandemic lockdown. That was our 1st practice together in months. I think once he gets it going again, everything will be wonderful.

Thank you guys for the feedback. Hopefully he'll get those vocals back in shape. It's nice to hear that the rest of the band sounds good.

You're welcome. I listened a second time and think the guy actually has lots of potential. His voice is good, seems like he needs to hone his craft a bit though.

  10. Not bad at all. I found myself cringing at the vocals at the beginning of the song but near the end he seemed to find himself a bit and I was head bopping.

Very much so. I think the vocalist has a cool inherent tone. I wonder what a short stint with the right vocal coach would yield.
What I’m hearing in this performance is someone competing with the sound levels, and trying to do it all with his natural voice. If he were to sing that song acapella, at 1/3 the volume, you’d hear instant improvement in pitch, phrasing, everything.

  12. Hey Charles,

That's fine rock and roll there. Maybe the vocalist is trying too hard and just needs to exercise more control. Like a lot of us, he's probably just a little out of practice and will get back in form soon. It does sound solid. Nice work.

    Thank you for your indulgence,

    BassCliff

I'm with @BassCliff and I would really like to hear a another, more balanced, recording. You guys did a fine job, especially given the current situation and hearing another song or two would be great. It's really difficult to get a good rehearsal recording in the spaces we all use, you guys are certainly headed in the right direction. Wash, rinse, repeat! You'll get it. Rock on....

Well I think we recorded another 2 or 3 songs from that night. The plan is to record about once a month, and release songs once a week. I still haven't heard the other recordings. I am wondering what the difference will be in the next batch of recordings.

This is just our garage practice. When we play out - no music stands.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but the main riff of the intro has some sort of counting error. I think the last two notes are supposed to be a longer value. That might be part of why it sounds rushed.

    It sounds kind of like
    1 e and a 2 e and a 3 and

But I think the original is more like
    1 e and a 2 e and a 3 4

Not to keep piling on the vocals, but it seemed to me he was too close to the mic a bit too frequently and seemed to overload it a bit.

Pretty tight but a relaxed comfortable feel overall. Sounded pretty good!

    music good, vocals not good.

the guy is singing too hard, he's way too high up in the mix and he's sometimes off key. he seems to be trying to push his voice as hard as possible instead of feeling the song, and it's hurting his singing.

  18. I thought it matched the original recording well, uptempo a bit - but hey we all do that lol!!!

Not being real familiar with this song (or this genre really), I'm not sure what vocal qualities are important, but I think the biggest issue with the vocals is that it sits on top of the mix. I believe a lot of pitch flaws would be less noticeable if it was in the mix a little better.

    BG vox need work, IMO.

Again, not my kind of music, but musically you guys seem very sound.

"Presence" was good for a crowdless recording (I hate performing for a camera and it usually shows.)
