It is my birthday on monday (Nov 19)... turining the big 2 - 0 .. yay... I am in a band that I just joined 2 weeks ago our first gig is on dec 4th. I was thinking that my 81 yamaha 100 watt combo, would work (it works well at practice with the boys and when people are eq'ed right I have no problems competing with the marshall tubeworks, or drums.... and we sound good.. so lets get to the POINT.. I want to obtain gear for my birthday. I am in the vancouver area... I was looking into getting some used stuff like say a GK 800rb, or an SWR 350 head, or what have you in the 300 - 400 watt range... I will worry about cab later, cause i can use the huge 115 cab that is a part of the yamaha for now, and borrow my buddies Hartke 210 for more sound. SOOOOO back to the point. I do not know where to get used gear for decent prices... i find that the local big wig music shops (long and mcquaid, tom lee) are far too pricey, even used, and the local buy and sell paper is throwing up stones week after week with limited bass selection... I am thinking I might be able to get the rents to spent 450 canadian tops, if a brother is lucky, and i know that good heads in that range exist, especially used. So help your fellow birthday bass buddy out here... thanks... vancouverites especially if you have good insight or heaven forbid used gear!!!!! later Mike
Dude I am playing at studabakers on kingsway. I am assuming that is what studes is so i guess I am playing with you there.. Our Guitarists are not mikes, only me.... My band is playing at 10:30 we are called Bush League... Expect a **** load of mistakes from me because i joined the band a couple weeks ago and Since I am out at UBC I only practise weekends.... I almost have the set down, but I am still having the odd moment where I forget what the *&$! is going on. later, thanks for the tips... Mike PS- when and which band are you?
My band sounds rather pearl jam, nickelback rock style.. some harder, some softer. Things to pay attention to would be our lead guitar player, he is excellent and has toured before, but will not show off, and the vocal sound, it is also very good with quite a lot of growl.. Things to watch out for in a bad way might be my bass playing haha thats it, just my bass playing... I have only played a year and a half and am not confident at all, but I am not the type of guy to be nervous so we will just have to see what happens... About the stores... are there any places in particular you could send me to? any regions of the lower mainland where lots of bass stuff goes through?? I just don't know... i am gonna hit the captains today just for fun, but you never know what you can find... Later... Mike
Yeah I already know the captain sucks, but it was out of curiosity... I had not been there for close to 2 years and the same alembic is still up on the wall... does he like not selling stuff? At not just another music store I saw an ampeg v 4b.. .cool looking old amp, it was about $560 bux... not too bad. Their stock is too much classic equipment that I can not afford, nor really care to have yet. I guess i am in the market for something along the lines of an swr350 or a GK800rb, or something cool like that ampeg... but in the 400 dollar range... i find that long and mcquaid only has prices that suit the older crowd and do not carry nice cheap cosmetically challenged but perfectly working gear more suited for a 20 year old university student... anyways check you later, Mike
Actually doing a bit of research and such i was thinking that a v-4b (ampeg of course) might suit just what I want right now... around 400 canadian more or less due to condition would be nice.... anyone have one for me? later Mike
