here it is! 635-24 w/ an ash body, maple burl top, honduran rosewood fingerboard, optional hipshot bridge, and hella good! tho, mike says he uses a "medium" weight ash and doesnt think lightweight ash has good tone, my bass is surprisingly particularly light. also, while its only my second 35" scale bass, like the Roscoe SKB3006 i tried at Jivesound, the bass plays unbelievably well. its like there's no difference in feel at all from my regular 34" scale basses. has this ferrari like feel that wont let me put it down. at first, i didnt even plug in the sucker, and found acoustically, it sounds deeep, growly, and oddly loud. course, plugged into my Epifani rig, it was a match made in heaven. the ash gives everything this kick in the gut punch, and the honduran neck smooths everything out like a light coating of butter. and while i'm spoiled by the "sounds sooo good, only needs two knobs" of my Sadowsky's, the MTD's onboard EQ wasnt too hard to suss and help me find my tone. cut out a little in the 1kHz range for that joker-esque fingerfunk, or crank the bass & 250Hz mids, with a touch of high end for some thumb happy slappin'. and heck, even the TKL brand bag is killer. soooooo lightweight, yet feels as determined as a kevlar jacket. thinkin' about actually using this instead of my usual gig bag. and BIG thx to Joel and Dave at the Groove Shoppe for mad hooking me up. i.e. they went up to Mike's shop, and picked out the 5 best tops at the shop, then emailed me pics of said tops, where i was able to pick the beaut you see on my bass. now, that's service. FYI, i've always been wanting to move up the string count in my bass playing, and thought if i'm gonna go there, might as well dive in head first. yet truth be told, there were a few times where i thought to myself, "why am i even fooling myself into thinking i can try playing 6 string?" but, then i pull the MTD close, and realize, "this is why"...
thx man, now you know why i was fighting for my dear life against that SKB!!! if i didnt have this MTD already on a 6 month order, i woulda been all over that sucker.
Jae, that 635 is talking to you...it's saying..."I'm lonely, I need another 6 string to keep me company...." ...then it looks longingly to the south, toward Jivesound.... ...congrats bro, that is one stunner of a bass, Mike is THE MAN.
WWWWOOOOWWW!!!! i hate you! i want one too!!! that's incredibly beautiful man! the top, the board, everything!!! this is not good for my gas.... edit: how's the g string sounding? i've been really wondering about this 35" makes the G sound thin. which i also noticed in my wahsburn 5'er. but of course, it's probably closer to toe dirt than to an MTD. hehe
I unfortunately didn't get to take the usual sexy spread of photos for this bass as I was in the midst of crazyness in my personal life when it arrived. Joker took the above photos - and did a nice job as well. Jae, you should grab a shot of the back of that bass as the Ash is stunning - as well as the purpleheart/walnut veneers. Enjoy - that bass absolutely kills. I was kind of hoping you were going to change your mind and leave it with us!
