I told myself I was gonna wait til I actually had the bass and had a chance to review it before starting this thread. But I got giddy and couldn't wait any longer. It should arrive early next week; I'll post a review after I get a chance to play it. In the meantime here are some pictures: Here's the index of pics
Congrats!! It looks great! Let us know how it looks "in person" when you get it... Sure you just don't want to drive down to Charlotte to get it??? Can't wait until mine is finished. Jeff
Man! I guess going to college doesn't mean being next to broke for some folks!!! I love it, Phat! Sort of a Ken Smith body with a Sukop upper horn. How about the lowdown for the spec details?
Congrats man. I hope you write here as soon as you get it. Im really interested in knowing how it turns out! Btw, I looked at the pictures.. It really looks KIller!
OK here are the specs: 35" scale maple/wenge/maple/wenge/maple neck graphite reinforced neck mahogany body wings quilted maple top Birdseye maple fretboard Bartolini triple coil pups NTMB-18 preamp with HR5.3 harness (treble, selectable mid, bass) active/passive switch parallel/series/single coil switches ABM bridge Hipshot ultralite tuners Jeff, Charlotte looks close on the map but it actually takes a while to get there. And my car is in the shop. Besides, its already in UPS's hands. Rickbass, Being in college just means you have to economize. Like eat ramen noodles and other cheap food. Plus I made over $3000 this summer working a 40 hour week. The body is actually Dave's design. I didn't have anything to do with it. I figured I would just mess things up if I tried to design my own body.
I got my DP Custom on Tuesday. The bass is beautiful. Even my apartment mate who knows nothing about guitars said it was sweet lookin'. The playability is just out of this world. The neck is as straight as you can get and the profile is just right. The tone is also incredible. With the series/parallel/single coil switches and the Bart preamp I can dial in any sound I want. I don't even bother with the myriad tone shaping options on my amp. The only significant thing that is not right with this bass is the G string buzzes at the fifth fret. But that's a pretty easy thing to get fixed, so no biggie. When I emailed Dave to tell him about it he took the time to explain how I could fix it, and even attached a picture. He even went as far to say he would make a house call if he had to. Now that's what I call service. Cosmetically there are also a couple imperfections. One is there is a little glue showing at some parts where the fretboard meets the neck, but nothing serious. The other is the nut is a little bit narrower than the neck is, so the nut isn't flush with the edges of the neck. This also doesn't bother me because it doesn't affect the performance of the nut, and even if it did bother me I could just get the nut redone. I emailed Dave about this and he said he had received a complaint from an earlier customer who said the nut was too wide, so he had purposely made the nut a little narrower. So overall I'm a very happy camper. IMO I definitely got more than what I paid for. I highly recommend Dave's work if you want a custom bass.
Very nice looking bass. I like seeing the pictures as it progressed. The quilt looks great! It's also nice to see a little more positive comments about DPs. I've never seen/played one, so I can't comment on that, but last weeks thread got too negative with people who had no experience with the basses or with Dave, but just chiming in to to add their nagative comments. I'm glad JT stepped in. It looks like very nice work and I can't wait to read the review!
I would also like to say its a wonderful looking bass. Glad you are happy with you new bass and I know you will have many years to get to know one another. I was in C'ville on the 11'th. I think I saw the UPS truck too. Congrats... Dan
Uhh....California? Bass7755, what were you doing in c'ville? I think you are the first talkbass member I know of that has been in the same city as me.
We were at the Uva. Medical center. Nothing bad...but we (me and my wife) were there from about 10:00 until 1:00pm. Then made the 2 hour drive home. Dan
