This is nuts, my friend Jared fought his first amature MMA fight. He fought someone who was 6" taller and 100 lbs heavier! I didn't get to go due to lack of funds, but I watched it on PPV online, which was surreal enough.

It's just still really weird to me. But he won by submission after a minute of trading punches really hard. Luckily, Jared was lighter and had been working cardio pretty hard, so he had more stamina to move around. He locked in a super tight headlock and the guy tapped. So awesome.

Actually, nobody has ever died in a sanctioned MMA fight. There are some street fights that get pretty brutal, but the guys he goes against in the beginning of his career aren't like the monster guys you see in the pros. Worst case scenario, he'll get a busted nose. He's got another fight coming up (probably) in July. He didn't get hit too many times which is good, because that's not much recovery time

Wow, that is pretty quick turnaround time between fights! Glad to hear he won, and is doing OK. Some acquaintances of mine are opening another gym (they already own 5 or 6) geared towards MMA training.

the turn around between fights in MMA is surprisingly much shorter than boxing..maybe that's why boxing is such a crap and dying sport. In the early days of UFC it wasn't strange to see someone fight two PPV's in a row, now that the roster is getting bigger though there's usually a 4-5 months between fights for some guys. Though some guys are fighting a ton lately.
