    Background:

I've been posting a for trade ad on craigslist for a couple of months now. I'm looking to trade my Ken Smith BSR5GN for a BSR6GN or a BSR6P. The reason I'm posting it on CL is because I want to do a local trade i.e. bring your bass, I inspect and play yours, you inspect and play mine and decide if you want to trade or not. I'm not looking to trade pictures via email, I'm not looking to ship my bass and I'm not in a hurry to get rid of it which is why I'm not selling it, I want to trade it for a Ken Smith 6 of similar value.

A fellow answers my ad about 2 months ago saying he has a BSR6P and he wants to trade for a 5. The conversation(email exchange) sorta goes like this:

Me: "Great, when can you come by, I'm in Brooklyn close to X stop on the Y train.

Him: "I'm in Philly" as in Philadelphia

At this point, I'm saying to myself, "what part of local deal does this person not undersatand?" I say okay, let's play along.

Me: "When can you come and check out the bass and bring yours?" It's something like Wednesday.

Him: "I can come to NY on the weekend. Can I see some more photos?"

I don't even bother to respond, because to me, this guy is flakey. Fast forward to today, I'm browsing NYC CL and I see an ad for a trade, it's this same cat with the BSR6P, posting in the NYC i.e. Manhattan CL saying his location is downtown.

    I email him:

    He replies:

    What you all think?

    No harm in trading pics?

  3. eh, kinda weird situation...I think you'd have better luck posting a trade offer in the tb classifieds honestly. We are all bass players here, meaning you have not only a greater chance of finding what you're looking for in a trade, but also someone who cares about the welfare and upkeep of their instrument as much as you do. Seeking someone who is willing to trade their Ken Smith BSR6GN for your BSR5GN seems like kind of an unrealistic request for a website like CL...but hey! I could be wrong.

The luck hasn't been better here and I'm not in a hurry. Interesting enough I've had a similar thing happen here, a person PM's me about the bass, I explain how the transaction is supposed to take place, they don't respond, I bump my post, same person PM's me as if we never had an exchange.

Take the pics, in the time you have been asking on here about taking the pics you could have already taken them and had him email you back saying yes or no.

Whats the harm in sending him some pics... I dunno why the issue with the pix but its perfectly reasonable for someone to ask to see some pix of an instrument before a deal.
Our motto here is " no pix... no bass" right???

A picture was included with the ad, and CL is for local deals meaning you meet you inspect, you decide. Having done enough deals, people that are serious call when you include your number in your email and don't pretend they are in one state when they are actually in another.

Again you asked us what we all thought. 80%+ say take the pics. why argue over it. sure most people on CL are flakes who have no intention of coming through. But if the man live in philly, its about an hour and a half drive. Put yourself in his shoes, would you drive an hour and a half to MAYBE trade a bass? If it we're me I would like as many photos as possible before i make the drive.

One pic wouldn't be enough for me if I was a buyer. I prefer to use email for comms until I'm serious about a deal.

As for CL, iirc where your ad is posted is based on what you put as your home location. So if he lived in Philly but wanted people in NYC to see the add he'd post an ad listing NYC as his location so it would show there.

While there are plenty of scammers, those two things don't seem that out of line.

Sometimes a request for photos is to see if you actually have the item. I've asked for that before. I'll even ask for a specific photo to see if the bass in in their possession. If someone balks at that, I might wonder what their issue is... but I'd probably move on. I go by my gut with CL due to the large number of scammers.

If your gut tells you something's fishy, move on.

You're looking to do a trade worth $3k+ and you can't be bothered to send a potential buyer a couple extra photos??? Having done enough deals, I can tell you that a person should NEVER drive 2 hours without having seen an up-to-date set of photos of the complete bass.

I would never buy and instrument from you.

To be blunt. Your pic looks like some sort of stock pic. If I were talking to you I would be worried that the pic you posted wasnt even the bass I was going to get. Combined with the fact that you would not post/email any more pics I would likely walk away from you because I would be afraid that you were a flake. Being blunt that is....

To me it feels like some sort of scam. When I originally posted my bass on CL this person contacted me and didn't mention anything about being in Philly until I told him to come over and check out the bass. For me that was a red flag which tells me that the person at the very least isn't serious.

The pictures he sent me of his 6 are the typical bad cell phone variety, you can see it's a Ken Smith BSR6P but you can't see any real detail. Whoever said my photo looks like a stock photo, I appreciate the compliment. :D

I agree a person should never drive 2 hours and that's why they shouldn't answer ads from people selling stuff that are located 2 hours away. :D

My gut tells me this is not deal that will go well and I'm in no need to move this bass anyway.
