Yesterday I scored this Peavey Century head and Carvin b115m cab from CL for $30 bucks. More than I paid for those white DR's on my rickencrapper lol. Anyway, I've read some stuff on here about the old Century. I cleaned it with air and contact cleaner and it sounds pretty nice. I cant find much on the Carvin. There's a sticker on the back that says it's a b115m.

Normally, I play an Aguilar sc500 through a vintage SVT 8x10. Can I daisy chain the 15 on that for a little bottom end or won't it handle the Aguilar? thanks

  2. A single 15 only has around the same output as a 2X10.

Your 8X10 will overpower the 15 easily, and it is a false belief that 15's put out more low end then 10's.

  3. however....having said that...

it is an unbelievably nice score....is the Peavy SS or tube....just askin' cause i don't know....

for 30.00 bucks, you can use that setup in a lot of ways, and for the price....way to go

    What a deal, man. Great.

Most of those old Peaveys were good to 2 ohms but check first. And yeah, the 15 won't add much to an 810.

@ Dave - they are 70's transistor amps. Some of them had a usable sort of "grind" when cranked up, others not so much. Not sure about the Century. They are one of those that sounds a good deal louder than it's power rating would lead you to believe.

yea it thumps. I'll just keep it as a travel practice amp. The guy had it in his basement and was a drummer and wanted 50. I went to see it 3 days after it was first posted. He had a bunch of chords and stuff too for $2.00 a piece. I told hiim I had plenty of chords. I played through it and it crackled and was staticky. I said "how much do you want?" he said "how about 50 and I'll throw in the cables". I said "how about $30 and you keep the cables?" and he said ok. It was a good negotiating lesson for my 14 year old son who was with me. :)

The Century is rated 100W into 4 ohms. It is rated to operate into a 2 ohm load, but puts out less power, and I wouldn't recommend it. They sound best with the original output transistors, so it's best to not blow one.

Besides the typical recapping, there is a modification that adds low end output. The power amp has a capacitor-coupled speaker output. The output at lower frequencies suffers because of it. You can beef up this capacitor to improve the lows.

Get some Deoxit for those pots and jacks and I bet that will go away.

  8. I have the same speaker cabinet and I like it. I would have paid 40 for it alone so that was definitely a good deal.

how do you use the "Footswitch" and "Booster" inputs? I noticed when I took the face off, someone had unplugged the booster connection. Does anyone know why? Bbbybld?

The footswitch turns the distortion on and off. I can't remember if the plug for that one needs to be stereo or mono, but I think it's mono. Anyway, you can make your own if you want. When you short the tip connection to the sleeve connection it disables the distortion.

The Booster jack is an output. Peavey made a separate power amp head around that time called the Booster that you could add on if you wanted more power. This output actually comes from the output of the power amp, but it's padded down to line level. Why is yours disconnected? I don't know, but sometimes people either mod the amp and use the jack for something else, or they never used it, so they swap positions with a worn out instrument input jack.
