i just got my new Hofner Icon HBB bass few days ago. before i had a jay turser beatle bass that i sold, and also i have a nice Rickenbacker 4003. guess who is my favorite bass player? anyway, that Hofner, is much superior to the jay turser IMHO. both in sound and look. i also ordered two Hofner tea cups knobs to complete the look and installed rotosound black nylon string on it. but there is some thing that is much disappointing me and butters me a lot. the finish is too bright. i love the deep and dark brown sunburst of the German hofners. and also the ct hofners. and the pickguard is also too bright and shiny. is there any advice for "darkening" and relicing my Hofner Icon? or maybe i just need to get use to it? thanks.
I want to love a Beatle bass, but they all feel like toys to me. Of the bunch of affordable ones available now, the Hofner Icon series seems to be the best put together, and nicest playing of the ones I've tried out. (Epi Viola, Rougue, and the Icon) The neck and space between frets is just too small for me. It was just yesterday I was fiddlin' around with the Icon, trying to fall in love, but there was no chemistry between us. As far as darkening yours, time will do it if you can wait, or lightly "dust" on some light brown spraypaint, or color tint if you can find some. Design Masters is a good brand of spray tints.
