Last summer I ran across a U-1 body. I had the wife get me a Longhorn neck for Christmas and I created a U-1 short scale bass.
I had to deepen the neck pocket a bit to use the original bridge location . But it's now a nice 30" scale that works really well.
I just had to share. View attachment 77291

Cool, I made one like that a few years ago but it was the U3 version. I gave it to a friend of my son's who needed a bass.

I also made a U2 version and later dismantled it but I still have this one I cobbled together from a Convertible guitar body and Longhorn neck:

It was a little more complicated since I had to install support blocks in the body for the bridge screws.

    Very cool, nice job.

I really like the body shape of the new Dano PRO guitar, and was wondering what would be involved with swapping out the neck and installing a Dano long-scale bass neck. I just thought it would be a cool bass.

When you converted the guitar into a bass, did you keep the guitar pickups? I have wondered whether Danelectro actually uses the same lipstick pickups on their bass and guitar models, or whether they are unique pickups for the different models. Anyone know?

I see there is a NEW Dano bass coming out in 2008. See www.danguitars.com and click the link for "The 2008 Danos are coming."

I've always heard the pick-ups are the same for guitar or bass.

That's really nice, I've always liked Danelectros. Odd basses, but in a good way!

  12. That bass looks awesome. Can't wait for the new Danos--I might just have to get one of the short scale basses.

Neat, the new Danos look like my old amp-in-the-case Dano/Silvertone.

FYI, I noticed someone has several auctions for Dano bass necks on ebay.

I had a U2 bodied 6 string bass. When I bought a Schecter Hellcat VI to replace it I got a Longhorn neck and 4 string bridge and turned it into a 4 string bass. Since it was 30" scale I didn't have to do anything with the neck pocket.

Here you can see it, along with the Schecter.

Allparts sells them and most parts too. I got my Longhorn neck and bridge from them, and the neck even came with tuners..

Yeah, the necks with tuners, bridge, pickups, and other hardware are readily available from Allparts. It's the bodies that are harder to find. I had to scavange 2 guitars for the U2 and U3 bodies but I found the Convertible body on Ebay several years ago.

I didn't have to deepen the neck pockets but I did have to widen them slightly with hand files.
