So now i have to use this laptop. i hate lap tops.

So, i leave my room, go back, change strings on my barse, and i realize my PC has shut down... i hit the power button, nothing.

I opened it up, the motherboard has power... but nothing else will power up.

I dont know the specs, dont ask... its all fairly new parts though. nothing more than 2 years old.

    What happend, possibly?

Could've been a TON of things. Does the system POST when you turn it on?

Check for burnt looking/smelling spots. Most likely though, the motherboard's dead, time to get a new, better one :D

    is it plugged in?

    He Ray, what is POST?

  7. just to run off a quick list of things that could have happened.

the hard drive could have burnt out/ crashed, etc.
the powersupply suddenly died (although if you could tell the motherboard still had power to it, then probably not)
some chip, most likely the BIOS chip, frizzed out.

i could help you more, probably, if you gave a better description. like, do you hear the harddrive spin up? do any lights come on? do you hear the power supply fan running? is the CPU fan running? also, on the strange coincedence, was there a power surge while you were doing other stuff? that could have caused a few problems too.

sorry for all the questions, but i troubleshoot computers as a part time job, so i thought i might be able to help.

  8. whoops, guess ray beat me too it. o well. but James, POST, in laymans terms, is how the computer boots up, checks itself, and then loads the operating system

I know... I'm in the field... I'm busting Ray.

and it stands for "Power On Self Test".... The POST is a built-in diagnostic program that checks your hardware to ensure that everything is present and functioning properly, before the BIOS begins the actual boot.

I wonder what the uptime on that PC is... I have it on a UPS, and my parents told me the power hasn't gone out for more than 5 mins this year. :hyper: If that's true, and it didn't randomly reboot, then it's been on since last June.

Find a good friend. Pull all your components, and put theirs in, or put yours in their system. I'm 99% sure it's the mother board though. After you do the swap, power on and see what happens. Before turning it on though, check to make sure that nothing has obvious shorts, as you could kill his PC too. Open up your computer, take the mobo out, and smell around, see where the heaviest smell of burnt comes from, that's your culprit. Hit up www.newegg.com and buy a new one :D.

That's a negative, but I've been around computer all my life (first one was a 386, w00t), and my father's a systems programmer, and formely a field tech for IBM, so I picked up A LOT from him.

  17. ah yes, almost the same situation with me. my dad was a computer person from the start, and he passed a lot of it along. now hes more network stuff. which reminds me, next up is for me to get my CCNA. its sad how im only a sophomore in highschool. *dies of nerd shame*

I have a few certs. They aren't quite as important as they once were since so many people cheat, but I enjoy the challenge of acquiring the knowledge.

Here are mine.........A+, Net+, Security+, MCSA, and MCSE in about a month. I have two more tests to pass for the MCSE. I am in Atlanta right now going to a weeklong bootcamp for my CCNA.

Did anyone ever think that it may have been computer suicide. Computers can stand only so much porn, Mr. Money...
