Last night at a local wine bar, that my buddies were playing, I was confronted by the owner/chef and manager of a new local eating establishment and was asked if my friends and I would like to have a weekly gig on her patio. I wasn't even playing. I mean the guys were using my equipment but I was in no means "apart of the band" that night. I had never met these people before but they obviously knew who I was. Calling me by name and saying bassist. How the hell do they know who I am? I've never seen them at a show before. It was awesome but kind of strange. They were really cool people but it hit me out of no where. Anyone have something like this happen to them?

Maybe but like I said, they are pretty new to our town. It is possible they have seen play out of town.

  6. I think you mean your reputation has preceded you. And yes, It has happened to me, and a little recognition is always nice.

I used to play aggressively around our area before going full time with the wedding band. I was recognized as "the bass player" in a 711, and asked if I was "that guy, in that band" at a red light haha.

my wife didn't think so. :D

i think your situation is much cooler.

  9. It pretty much happens everyday. Whether I'm puttin' gas in the car, at the grocery store, just wherever. Hell,if people wouldn't ask me where we're playing,or gonna be playing,it'd probably feel kinda weird.

Yes. And I'm not sure I'll ever tire of the feeling. :)

Buying mariokart a couple of weeks ago for my nintentdo 3D, the manager at the store said, "sorry joe. we don't have it in stock." I asked how he knew me, and he said he was an old nerve fan. :) I've seen strangers on the street wearing Nerve T-shirts too.

Last week I got a compliment like never before though. I've been playing with a somewhat established guitar guy, and he often asks other musicians to come up and play a song. I handed my bass over to an older bass player who I thought kicked ass. Afterwards I talked to him, and he told me he came down to the gig because someone told him he's got to check out the bass player who's playing with this guy. That's never happened before. Or at least, I've never been told.

Word. It always feels good. I don't know how I'd feel about being noticed everywhere. It would be fun but I like to "hug the walls" most of the time.

Oh, and +1 for being a nerd. I enjoy mariocart as well. :)

Who do you play for, if you don't mind me asking? I could probably find out but I do all this from my phone. Can't see the profiles, ya know?

San Diego, California: Population 1,301,617. There are more than 1,488 bass players in San Diego.

Maybe that's why it doesn't happen to me so often.

  16. Really?!? Only 1,488 people? Damn,that depresses me. ****,I'm not even a drop in the bucket,am I?:D

I imagine it has its pluses and minuses. You know, large fish in small pond or vice-versa. I'm definitely a small fish in my pond.

Cool that happened, count it as a blessing and a statement about your talent...
BTW, I think you mean your reputation "preceded" you meaning your skill was known before they met you
as opposed to your reputation "exceeded" you meaning your skills were not as good as expected once they met you.

Yeah. That was pointed out earlier. :) T9 makes some strange decisions.

  20. Be careful what you wish for.

I used to have the recognition-from-strangers-on-the-street thing back in the eighties. Doesn't happen much now thank goodness. It came to a head for me in 1984. I was sitting in hospital with my father, who had been taken there after a stroke, and was not expected to survive the day, when some nurse came up to me with "Hey aren't you.......?"

From that time on I hated it and was glad when I left it mostly behind. How anyone actually famous deals with it I have no idea.

(P.S. Dad proved the doctors wrong, thank goodness....made it to 2010!)
