Wow. I don't know who I can really talk to about this, but I'm quite upset. My laptop was stolen today. I know I'm probably not going to get it back, but I'm hopeful. I'm terribly upset at my roommate, who didn't close the door completely when he went to class.

    Now, I'm on a friend's computer. Aagh

sorry. i'm just trying to calm down

That sucks man, you should have carved your name in it or something so if you see it you can take it back, haha. Also, don't they have those doors that auto-lock or whatever whenever they are closed, you could get one?

I live in a city with the 3rd highest crime rate for a medium sized city in the nation, but I have been VERY lucky so far. The windows on my truck are very, VERY dark, so especially at night you can't see inside hardly at all. I definitely never leave anything in sight in my truck either--no CD cases, no loose CD's, no NOTHING of any value whatsoever.

I always make sure to shut the door to my room, and I promptly beat the crap out of anyone that doesn't shut it behind them when I'm not here---and obviously, only people who I know can even be here when I'm not.

Really sorry to hear that though....I've had things jacked before (although not here in Waco), so I know how it feels. It definitely DOES make you more cautious with all of your things.
  8. heres a story a friend told me baout his Wal...

left it in the Wal case (£2000 bass here), in the bakc seta of his car, with a bergos jacket <-- these things have become the latest fasion by the "townies" around here.

so what happens? some asses break into the carm steal the jacket... didn't even touch the Wal. :D

sorry to hear about your laptop man, time to give your room mate some tinnitus i think... or some head in the bass drum... :p

Sorry to hear about your laptop. We had somone break in to our house a few years ago, so we got a dog. Nobody tries to break in anymore. Over the weekend we had someone open our door. Bad idea. It was the kid next door. He opend the wrong door. He didn't get bit, but I don't think he'll be doing that again.

D: It always sucks to have something stolen, hopefully you/your parents will have some kind of insurance so that you can get it replaced at least.

Thanks guys. You know, we do have a door that self locks after you close it; but my roommate already admitted to not closing the door when he left (after I did for class). I haven't gotten so much as an apology out of him. But anyway, what good would that do?

My parents told me we have some kind of property insurance but the deductable is $2500. As my laptop cost only (haha, "only") $1100, it's no use filing a claim.

I'm so lucky that at least I have the ones around campus to use, but still... that was mine. I'm so angry at my roommate right now. I never liked him much to begin with (smokes weed in the bathroom and makes my towels smell) and now this just adds to that. Sure, I could have taken more steps to prevent it like hiding it, but it is HIS fault that the room was burgled as he didn't close the door. As I need that computer, I'd love to make him pay. It is, after all, his fault. I just know it's not going to happen...

this is turning to a rant again. i'll be back

Don't think it's burglary if the door was open.. But anyways, it sucks.

Perhaps your roomie should pay at least a part of the machine, as it was directly his fault that it got jacked? I'd be hella pissed at my roomie if he'd pull off something like that - we have separate locked rooms but there's a load of my stuff in our common kitchen too..

  14. Was anything else taken? I'm just wondering if the roommate has pawned it to keep his weed supply good........sorry, maybe I shouldn'ty have planted that seed.....

Crappy roommates suck almost as much as being burgled.

  16. Sue your roommate. He left the door open and you lost your comp because of it. I don't think he stole it because he probably would have covered himself by apologising if he did. He's probably not saying sorry so he doesn't admit guilt in case you do sue him. In any case, sue his @$$ - note the dollar signs.

I came as close as ive ever been to being mugged in the street outside my flat a few days ago. I was extremely lucky that a bus pulled up at the stop and a complete hero of a man saved me. Im completely phobic of going out by myself after dark now. Which sucks because its getting dark here at about 5pm :(

I'm assuming you don't carry Renters Insurance?

People, there is NO reason to NOT have Renters Insurance... It's CHEAP... maybe $10 to $15 a month... Right now, you'd be using a brand new laptop, if you had this coverage...

If you can't get renter's insurance, safeware has computer equipment insurance policies that cover accidental breakage, fire, theft, etc. When I had my policy it was only $100 to cover $4,000 worth of equipment. If you Google on safeware you'll find their website (no, I'm not involved with them in any way except having been a customer in 2001).
